5 MIND-BLOWING Blending Effects (Premiere Pro Tutorial)
Education
Introduction
As a video editor, you have endless possibilities. Translating your ideas from your head into the timeline can be challenging. One crucial aspect that can help you achieve this is understanding blending modes. Today, you're in luck, my friend, because we'll dive into five blending effects that can transform your videos into masterpieces.
Effect Number 1: Dreamy Video Look
To create a dreamy effect:
- Duplicate your video in the timeline by holding down Alt and dragging it one track up.
- Head to the Effects Library and find the Gaussian Blur effect. Drag it onto the duplicate video.
- In the Effects Controls, increase the blurriness to around 100. You'll now have a blurry video.
- To blend this with the original clip, go to Opacity and find the blend modes. Choose Screen, which will make dark areas transparent, allowing lighter areas to interact with the original video.
- Adjust the opacity and blur to tweak the effect as necessary.
Effect Number 2: Trippy Music Video Effect
For a trippy delay and glowing edge effect:
- Duplicate your clip once again by holding down Alt and dragging it one track up.
- Go to Effects Controls and find the Opacity property. Choose Difference from the blending modes.
- Offset the clips a few frames by selecting one and using your arrow keys to move it one or multiple frames forward.
- Move both clips one track up, then hold down Alt and duplicate the bottom clip. Select the top two clips, right-click, and choose Nest.
- With the nested sequence selected, go to Effects Controls, find Opacity, and set the blending mode to Linear Dodge (Add).
- Add some glow by finding the VR Glow effect in the effects library and dragging it onto the nested sequence. Adjust Luma Threshold, Radius, and Brightness as desired.
Effect Number 3: Glass Text Effect
To create a glass text effect:
- Overlay a beautiful nature clip with text by using the text tool.
- In Essential Graphics, place the video underneath the text layer.
- Ensure the text layer is selected and scroll down to Mask with Text. This will fill the text layer with the video.
- Offset the text layers slightly with Alt + Arrow Right to make the video inside visible.
- Duplicate your graphic layer and set the blending mode to Screen. Create a mask using the pen tool and adjust Feather to make it look like a reflection.
- Brighten the text using the Lumetri Color panel by adjusting Exposure. Do the same for the second clip.
Effect Number 4: Double Exposure Effect
To achieve a double exposure blend:
- Overlay a clip of a woman over a nature video.
- With the top clip selected, set the blending mode to Multiply under Opacity in Effects Controls.
- Open Lumetri Color, expand the Curves tab, and create a curve to increase the contrast, making the lighter parts more visible.
Effect Number 5: Transition Blending
To blend multiple clips for a seamless transition:
- Ensure the first clip overlaps the second one slightly.
- Create a new Color Matte with a white color and draw a circle using the Ellipse Tool.
- Center the circle in the frame and set its color to black.
- Animate the scale from 0 to a value that covers the entire frame using keyframes.
- Select the clips and create a Nest. Apply the Track Matte effect to the first clip, select the video track for the animation, and set the composite to Matte Luma.
