Introduction
We have just concluded one of the largest AI advertising competitions in history, engaging over 140,000 individual votes and showcasing 440 impressive submissions. This unique event, organized in collaboration with the Ad Agency Via, culminated in extraordinary creativity, offering contestants a chance to win a share of a $ 5,000 prize pool.
Among the many finalists, the winners would not only take home cash winnings but also incredible creative opportunities with Via, along with enrollment in the Curious Refuge AI advertising course and, of course, bragging rights as the champion of the very first AI advertising competition within the Curious Refuge Community.
Meet the Judges
Our esteemed judges were:
Dave Clark: A filmmaker and technologist from San Diego, California, with a long career in the advertising industry including roles as a creative director and commercial director.
Michael Shields: Founder and CEO of Via, specializing in AI filmmaking tailored for businesses, including small local businesses and Amazon resellers.
Nick Cleveroff: Chief Creative at Native Foreign, dedicated to telling original brand stories, excited to explore AI tools in advertising.
Annie Hlin: Co-founder of Playbook, working at the interface of emerging technologies and content, with a background in traditional advertising.
Ross Martin: President of Known, a full-service media and creative agency, driving innovation at the intersection of creativity and technology.
The Assignment
Contestants were challenged to create commercials for one of three brands: Culture Pop Soda, Pure Water, and Whip Notic. Using provided assets, they were required to utilize artificial intelligence in generating much of their advertisements. The submissions were varied, and after careful consideration, we narrowed it down to a select few of our favorites.

1. Culture Pop Soda - Andrew Goodman
This vibrant ad was celebrated for its high energy, showcasing the product as the hero with a catchy tune that echoed the essence of global pop culture.

This ad presented a fun and gutsy narrative that aligns closely with the brand's messaging, although some feedback indicated it could go further in achieving its goals.
3. Culture Pop Soda - Simon Meyer
Portraying a relatable character wishing for change while enjoying a Culture Pop Soda, this ad effectively wove storytelling into the fabric of the brand experience. Critics noted its resemblance to existing mascots but lauded its overall creativity.
4. Path Water - Ludovit Nastasen
This ambitious submission stood out for its unique artistic style, using a deep voiceover to evoke feelings of adventure while emphasizing the environmental responsibility of water consumption.

Combining humor with environmental messaging through a narrative about a monster made from plastic, this fun and engaging piece effectively presented the brand's message.
6. Whip Notic - Justin Toly
A top contender featuring original music that enhanced the storytelling experience, this advertisement showcased the brand's function along with an imaginative narrative.
7. Whip Notic - Verina Thum
This piece was recognized for its creative direction appealing specifically to a target demographic, although technical execution could be polished further.
8. Audience Favorite - Fabio Garcia
Chosen through audience votes, Garcia's submission captured the hearts of many viewers, with a blend of creativity and brand highlight.
Winners Announced
After a competitive judging process, the results were as follows:

- 2nd Place ($ 1,500): Justin Toly
- 1st Place ($ 5,000): Simon Meyer, for exceptional storytelling in his ad
Additionally, the audience’s favorite was chosen: Fabio Garcia won $ 500. Each brand selected their own favorite submissions, reinforcing the creativity across various approaches.
