Phase 3 Phonics: the ‘oi’ sound.
Education
Introduction
In this lesson, we will be learning the ‘oi’ sound. But before we delve into the new sound, let's start by singing the alphabet song. Once we've warmed up, we will revise our old sounds through a game called "Roll and Read".
To play "Roll and Read", we will need two dice. We will roll the dice and read the word corresponding to the number we get. Some words will contain the digraphs we have been working on, while others will be tricky words. Let's give it a try!
Now, let's move on to the new sound. The ‘oi’ sound is made up of the letters O and I together. Let's practice saying it together - "oi".
We will also practice writing the new sound. First, we will write the letter O - go around and up, then flick. Next, we will write the letter I - go down, flick, and add a dot. By combining O and I, we can make the ‘oi’ sound.
Now, it's time to have some fun with treasure! We will play a game called "Buried Treasure", where we will search for words that contain the ‘oi’ sound. These words will be written on gold coin cutouts. We will decide if the words are real or rubbish, keeping the treasure words and discarding the others.
In addition to the game, we can also make our own treasure coins using colored paper or card. Cut them into any shape you like, write words with the ‘oi’ sound on one side and "real" or "rubbish" on the other.
To further practice the ‘oi’ sound, we will play a game called "Full Circle". Starting with a word like "soil", we will change one letter at a time to form new words until we return to the original word. For example, changing the 's' in "soil" to 'f' gives us "foil", then changing 'f' to 'c' gives us "coil", and finally changing 'c' to 'b' gives us "boil".
By practicing the ‘oi’ sound in various contexts, we can reinforce our understanding and improve our reading and writing skills. Have fun exploring the ‘oi’ sound and enjoy the treasure hunt!
