A Cool New Thing About YouTube Monetization

Education

Introduction

Understanding the intricacies of YouTube monetization is crucial for content creators who want to make a living through their channels. Here’s something cool and important that you need to know about YouTube monetization:

Requirements for YouTube Monetization

To start earning revenue from your YouTube channel, you need to meet specific requirements:

  1. Subscribers: A minimum of 1,000 subscribers.
  2. Watch Hours or Views:
    • 4,000 hours of public watch time within the last 12 months.
    • Alternatively, 10 million YouTube Shorts views in the last 90 days.

It's essential to note that you only need to fulfill one of these requirements to become eligible for monetization.

Monetizing Long-Form Content vs. YouTube Shorts

Once your channel is monetized, you can earn revenue from both long-form content and YouTube Shorts. However, there are differences in the earnings potential:

  • Long-Form Content: Typically generates higher revenue.
  • YouTube Shorts: Can monetize, but the RPM (Revenue Per Mille) tends to be lower, and the earnings might not be significant unless you reach very high view counts.

For many creators, like us, achieving 10 million Shorts views can be very challenging. Our channel, despite being around for 10 years, hasn’t come close to hitting this milestone. However, as our channel is monetized, we still earn some revenue from YouTube Shorts – it's just not very much.

Conclusion

Even if you’ve never made a YouTube Short but your channel is monetized, you can still earn money from your Shorts. Just remember that the RPM may be low, and the overall earnings might not be substantial.
