ACTUALLY MOVING: The Move (Part 3)

Howto & Style

Introduction

As the move to a new workshop gains momentum, preparations are well underway. Steve and Jake are set to collect leftover equipment from the previous setup, which makes way for significant changes. A large 3X CNC milling machine, known as a Gantry Mill, is ready to be relocated, and with the momentum of sorting and organizing, plans are underway to continue cleaning and prepping.

New Shop Office Space

One of the major accomplishments during this transition is the establishment of a shop office. Approximately 500 square feet of space has been reclaimed and transformed into a functional office area. This office is integrated into the shop and features air conditioning, tall ceilings, and a load-bearing structure, making it ideal for storage above. Plans for the office include installing outlets, lights, insulation, and drywall, creating an inviting environment for operations.

Renovating the Bathroom

As the updates continue, attention is being paid to other areas, such as the bathroom. The electrician has made significant progress, installing outlets and lights which helps improve visibility in what was previously a more dreary setting. The idea is to enhance this area and ensure that it doesn't reflect poorly on the emerging workspace.

The Big Move

With everything falling into place, the actual moving process begins. Hunter, the newest team member, is eager to start shifting materials and metal structures. The goal is to have the shop up and running by Friday, less than a week from the start of the move. The first task involves transferring metal racks onto a trailer for easier relocation. The plan is to minimize the number of times each piece is moved to streamline the process.

Organizing and Redesigning Storage

Through the moving process, there's an opportunity to reorganize and rethink the layout of storage. The new building provides taller ceilings, offering more options for storing materials such as sheet goods. Past experiences of haphazard storage have prompted a desire to create a more efficient system.

Discovering Unique Historical Materials

One particularly interesting find during the cleanup is a stash of Inconel, a rare alloy used historically in medical applications, particularly in bone surgery. This material was used to craft items such as screws and nails for implants, showcasing the machine shop's role in significant medical advancements in the 1950s.
