Adobe Premiere Pro Tutorial: How To Start For Beginners

Film & Animation

Introduction

Hey in this video I'm going to show you a fail-proof, easy way to get started editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. Let's go! You got to just press record.

Introduction

Hey, what's up? It's Omar To Corey with Think Media, helping you build your influence with online video. In this video, I wanted to show you how to properly set up your workflow to begin editing in Premiere Pro. A lot of times throughout your workflow, you can mess up along the way, and starting your project correctly and organized is really important.

Preface

Before I start screen sharing, make sure your settings are consistent throughout. The settings on your camera are a big deal based on how you're going to edit your video and then how you're going to export your video. If you want to learn how to set up your camera, whether you’re vlogging or doing YouTube videos like this, check out the link in the description below as well as the YouTube card. Once you’ve got that dialed in, you’ve shot your video, now you're going to go into your computer.

Step-by-Step Process

Preparing Your Files

For this tutorial, I'm going to use my M50 photography tips video. Notice how I edited the folder with the date. We love doing it by year, month, and then the date when it was recorded. It’s helpful because by the name I'm able to base things off when they were shot and still search that. For example, "M50 Photography Tips" shows up easily. Inside the folder, I keep my talking head stuff (labeled as A-roll) and B-roll in separate folders. This organization makes it easy to come back to.

Create a new folder called "project" for every video. Name it accordingly.

Setting Up Premiere Pro

Open Adobe Premiere. If you don’t have it, make sure you check out the 30-day free trial linked in the description below. We love the Adobe suite; it's a game changer. Open Premiere Pro and hit 'New Project' in the top left. Name it and browse to save the project file in the project folder. This helps keep all auto-saves and your main project file in one place for easy reference.

Importing Files

Once Premiere Pro is all opened up, double click in the “import media to start” section and navigate to your project folder to import your A-roll and B-roll footage. You can see it in icon view for easier scrubbing through the video.

Creating a New Sequence

Right-click your clip and go to 'New Sequence from Clip'. This sets your sequence based on the clip settings, ensuring all your settings are consistent and you don't have to manually configure them.

Naming Your Sequence

Rename your sequence from the default (usually something like C002) to something descriptive like “M50 Photo Tips”. This helps distinguish your sequences, making the editing process much smoother.

Additional Tips

Creating an Assets Folder

Create an assets folder within your Premiere project file for recurring elements like intros, music, and title cards. This is especially useful for consistency and efficiency, whether you’re doing client work or creating regular content.

Saving Your Assets Project

Save your project with all your assets, so when you start a new project, you only need to import the new footage, right-click to start a sequence, rename it and save it in your project folder. This streamlines your workflow significantly.

Conclusion

I hope this tutorial helped you get started with Adobe Premiere Pro. If you have any specific tutorials you’d like to see, let me know in the comments below. Check out our Adobe Premiere playlist for more helpful tips.
