Affinity Photo Tutorial: How to Increase Resolution and Quality of An Image/Photo
Education
Introduction
Hey, it's KJ Designs with another tutorial on Affinity Photo. In this tutorial, we'll explore how to increase the resolution of an image. We will take a pixelated photo and enhance its pixel density and overall resolution. For those who want to follow along with the same image I'm using, I've included a link to the photo in the video description. Let's get started!
Step-by-Step Guide to Increase Image Resolution
Step 1: Zoom in to Assess Pixelation
Before increasing the resolution, let's zoom in to see how pixelated the image is. You will notice that the eyes are pixelated and lack clear resolution.
Step 2: Copy and Paste Image to a New Document
To start the process, copy the pixelated image into a new document. Here are the steps:
- Select the layer of the image.
- Copy the layer.
- Go to
File
and selectNew from Clipboard
.
This will paste the same pixelated image into a new document.
Step 3: Resize the Image
Now, let's increase the resolution of the image:
- Go to the
Document
menu. - Select
Resize Document
. - Change the size. For example, if the original size is 1280x847, increase the width to at least 2000 pixels. The height will adjust automatically.
- Ensure the
Resample
option is enabled and set the resample mode tobicubic
. - Click
Resize
.
You'll notice a subtle improvement in image quality.
Step 4: Add Sharpness Using High Pass Filter
To further enhance the image, we will add sharpness:
- Select the image layer.
- Go to
Live Filters
and selectHigh Pass
. - Increase the radius to around 16 pixels.
- Change the blend mode of the High Pass filter from
Normal
toSoft Light
.
Step 5: Apply Sharpness Selectively
The high pass filter sharpness will be applied all over the image by default. To apply it selectively:
- Invert the high pass filter by pressing
Ctrl
orCommand + I
. - Select the Brush Tool and ensure the color is set to white.
- Paint over the areas you want to sharpen, such as the eyes.
Step 6: Fine-tuning
For additional fine-tuning:
- Double-click on the white icon of the high pass filter layer.
- Adjust the radius according to your preference.
Now, you have a high-resolution image with enhanced clarity compared to the original pixelated version.
