AI is Stealing my Videos
There's a concerning story that came out today with the headline stating that Apple trained its AI models on YouTube content without consent, including videos from popular content creators like MKBHD. As of now, Apple has not released a statement. However, here is my perspective on the real issue:
Apple, along with many other tech giants, train their AI models using data purchased from third-party data scraping companies. Some of these companies acquire their data through slightly illegal means. It has come to light that one such company extracted large amounts of transcript data from thousands of YouTube videos, including those by Mr. Beast and my own channel.
This practice presents a significant problem that will likely persist and evolve in the coming years. Although Apple can argue that they are not directly at fault, they continue to obtain data from these third-party sources, thus creating a pressing need for better vetting processes.
To make matters worse, my channel pays for highly accurate, manually-created transcriptions for each video to ensure accessible content for hearing-impaired viewers, since automatic captions are often inaccurate. This translates to the fact that the stolen transcriptions represent paid content, thus exacerbating the issue of content being stolen multiple times.
