AI Video Tools Are Exploding. These Are the Best
Science & Technology
Introduction
I've been experimenting with AI video tools and covering them on this channel for a long time, and right now is the most exciting and fun time in AI video yet. Runway and Luma Labs have been in the spotlight and I'll cover some immediate real-world use cases for them, but my personal favorite tool is actually not one of those making the headlines. I'll get to that a little later, plus some amazing lip-syncing tools and some open-source models. There have been a lot of advancements recently.
Runway Gen 3: Dominating the Timeline
I've got to start with Runway Gen 3 since it's been dominating my timeline. It's the best text-to-video model available to use right now, something particularly useful with Gen 3 is text like these title sequences. It is amazing at this. I'll show a few of my favorite examples. One particular example stood out with a perfect title sequence for a cooking channel, showcasing excellent fluid simulation and physics. Adding sound design would make these production-ready title sequences.
Example with Future Pedia
I decided to try Gen 3 for Future Pedia. After logging in and navigating through a suite of image and video tools, I clicked on Gen 3 and typed in a prompt for a dynamic title screen. I set the duration to 5 seconds and clicked generate. Here's how it came back—it looks fantastic. Despite some minor misspellings, the final output is impressive, especially for title sequences.
Luma Labs Dream Machine: Best for Image to Video
The best image-to-video tool right now is Dream Machine from Luma Labs. You can also do text-to-video, but where Luma truly shines is with image-to-video transformations. Upload an image, add a prompt, and watch as it turns the image into a stunning animation. It's particularly good when using keyframes to create seamless transitions.
Example Transformations
For instance, I uploaded an image of a volcano and added the prompt "volcano erupting contained within a drinking glass surrounded by peaceful tranquility." The result was perfect. Here are a few more examples, including some involving more outlandish transitions. It's free to try, but larger transformations take hours without a subscription.
LTX Studio: Maximum Control and Speed
LTX Studio offers the most control out of any platform I've tried and has impressive speed. You can start from scratch, input a script, or use a simple prompt. It builds an entire short film in minutes, complete with editable scenes. For example, I crafted a story about a futuristic city controlled by AI entities and quickly turned it into an animated short.
Features and Flexibility
LTX Studio allows you to change characters, style, and even face-swap. Everything is customizable. For instance, I generated scenes based on a Cyberpunk theme, regenerated styles with mid-journey images, and edited scenes directly within the platform. All generated scenes can be exported for further editing in Premiere, where I could fine-tune them.
Korea: Most Fun and Unique Platform
The platform I've been having the most fun with is Korea. It focuses on abstract, trippy morphing animations rather than realism. You can generate videos by adding keyframes and text prompts. I created a sequence with translucent bioluminescent flowers, jellyfish, and dragons—the results were mesmerizing.
Creative Upscaler
Korea also features a creative upscaler, which closely resembles the original video but reimagines it with AI enhancements. This is particularly useful for fixing issues in lower-resolution videos.
Lip-Syncing Tools: Hedra and Live Portrait
Hedra offers some of the most expressive talking avatars, working quickly with both human and non-human characters. Live Portrait, on the other hand, maps a reference video onto the avatar for more expressive results. While Hedra works well with a wide range of characters, Live Portrait excels with straight-on shots.
Open Source Models and Community Contributions
The open-source community has been pioneering methods and workflows that form the foundation for paid platforms. Notably, Comfy UI and Animate Diff offer customization and control for those willing to dive deep. Creators like James G have been pushing the boundaries in this space with incredible results.
Cling: High-Quality but Hard-to-Access
Cling is another platform as good or better than Runway and Dream Machine but difficult to access without a Chinese phone number. Although the quality is amazing, the signup process and waitlist are hurdles to consider.
Conclusion
We are finally at a point where AI can create videos usable in the real world, not just for memes. While there are still limitations, the tools have come a long way and offer a lot of fun and creativity.
