Artificial Intelligence Education in Schools

Introduction

Hi everyone, welcome to the session on AI in schools. This is another Meetup that we have for productive screen time for children at KidsNary. This will be the agenda that I thought, but before I go there, just quickly introducing myself again. My name is Asha, and I am the founder of KidsNary. Our aim is to make the screen time of children more productive, wherever they are in the world. So that's a little bit about me.

Agenda

In this session, we'll cover the following:

  1. Overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  2. Global Trends in AI Education and Schools
  3. CBSE's AI Curriculum in India
  4. State Boards' AI Curriculum
  5. Challenges in AI Education
  6. Q&A Session

Overview of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) aims to mimic human intelligence, with a focus on two main categories: narrow AI and general AI. Narrow AI includes machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks, all designed to perform specific tasks. General AI aims to replicate broader human cognitive abilities but is still in developmental stages. Super AI aims to go beyond human intelligence but is currently a distant goal.

Key components that make AI possible include:

  • Machine Learning: Algorithms and tools for AI
  • Deep Learning: A specialized area within machine learning
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): Used in language translation, chatbots like ChatGPT, etc.
  • Robotics, Fuzzy Logic, Computer Vision: For automating human tasks
  • Planning and Knowledge Processing, Expert Systems, and Perception: To enhance AI capabilities

From our research, here are the primary trends in AI education worldwide:

Primary School

  • Basic introduction to AI, use cases
  • Gamified learning methods, such as Scratch programming
  • Understanding AI in everyday contexts

Secondary and High School

  • Learning Python for AI, machine learning, and deep learning courses
  • Project-based learning, including partnerships with tech companies
  • AI and robotics clubs
  • Government policy support for ethical AI usage and equitable access to resources

CBSE's AI Curriculum in India

Here's how the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India is implementing AI curricula:

Classes 6-8

According to the 2020 New Education Policy, there are plans to introduce AI and coding as skill-based education. The focus is more on basic AI concepts, coding, and understanding AI's presence in our day-to-day lives.

Classes 9-10

  • Applications of AI
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and AI ethics
  • AI Project Life Cycle and neural network coding in Python

Classes 11-12

  • Mathematical foundations for AI
  • Ethical decision-making and data analysis
  • Machine learning concepts like regression, classification, and clustering
  • Storytelling and visual representation for AI-based decision-making projects
  • Capstone projects such as smart home automation, AI-powered chatbots, and health assistants

State Boards' AI Curriculum

State Boards are also taking steps to integrate AI into their curricula:

  • UP schools are set to introduce AI and coding, impacting millions of students.
  • Emphasis on coding, networking, and basic AI applications
  • Hands-on projects and partnerships with private players for better curriculum alignment

Challenges in AI Education

While progress is being made, several challenges remain:

  1. Government and Policy Support: More comprehensive policies and support systems are needed.
  2. Teacher Training: Teachers need thorough training to keep up with AI advancements.
  3. Access to Labs and Devices: Ensuring that practical AI education is accessible to all students, especially in lower-income and rural areas, remains a significant hurdle.

FAQ

Q: What is the aim of AI education in schools? A: The aim is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to leverage AI for solving real-world problems and to prepare them for future technological advancements.

Q: Which programming language is primarily taught for AI in schools? A: Python is primarily taught because many AI, machine learning, and deep learning tools are developed using this language.

Q: How is AI introduced to younger students in primary schools? A: AI concepts are introduced using gamified learning methods, basics of AI use cases, and simple programming environments like Scratch.

Q: What are some of the key challenges in implementing AI education? A: Key challenges include teacher training, access to labs and devices, and making the curriculum relevant to real-world applications.

Q: How does the CBSE curriculum for AI expand as students move to higher classes? A: The CBSE curriculum starts with basic applications and ethics in AI at lower classes and progresses to advanced Python, machine learning, and real-world project life cycles in higher classes.

Q: How do state boards in India approach AI education? A: State boards often integrate AI with existing subjects like coding and networking, and emphasize hands-on projects and practical applications.
