Audio/Midi Routing In Logic Pro For Synth Wall Setup! | Studio Build Ep. 3 |

    blog thumbnail

    Introduction

Welcome back, everyone! It’s your boy Juan Miguel here, continuing my journey to show you how I built my synth wall, which you can see behind me. If you haven't checked out my previous video detailing the functionality of all my synth boards and how they’re hooked up to my computer, make sure to check that out through the links in the description or in the cards above.

Today, I'm diving into the nitty-gritty of how everything is set up inside my computer for functional production and recording using these synths. I'm excited to share with you how you can set up your own system to create great music!

    Setting Up the Digital Workspace

Here’s my production template. It allows me to record and produce seamlessly. For example, I can pull up sounds from the Nord, like so:

    [Music Playback]

You can hear the beautiful tones of the Nord right away. I can also access other synths easily, such as the Gor piano, Nautilus, and Loop Elements. Just check this out:

    [Music Playback]

Loop Elements is a fantastic tool; I recommend checking out the link in the description to pick something up.

As for my Sub37, I can use the editor to find sounds that really pop:

    [Music Playback]

And just like that, I can record it. To clarify, this sound is coming directly from the Sub37, not a plugin.

    Introducing Peculiar Sounds V2

I can't wait to announce something groundbreaking for all producers and musicians! I'm introducing Peculiar Sounds version 2, which now has a Standalone mode. This means you can use it independently from any DAW. You can blend up to two sounds to create rich textures.

We've added two new effects: the Loow Fizer and the Mod Filter. The Loow Fizer gives you instant vibes with a single press of a button, while the Mod Filter adds dynamic movement to any sound you apply it to.

We’ve also added an innovative MIDI browser that includes hundreds of core progressions, melodies, and drum loop MIDI files that you can drag straight into your DAW. As a bonus, V2 includes sounds from the Block expansion for totally free, bringing the total to over 400 patches.

Peculiar Sounds V2 is not just an update; it’s truly a revolutionary plugin. You can grab it from our website right now!

    Recording and Organizing Tracks

Let’s get into the meat of things and see how my setup works. When I want to play an external MIDI track, I simply choose the device I have set up, like the Minilogue—super easy!

    1. Choose the Device: Select Minilogue and hit create. Now you have an instrument track.
    2. Create an Audio Track: This ensures your audio comes through as intended. For instance, set it to channel two.
    3. Track Stack Creation: By creating a track stack, I can keep everything organized, especially when recorded sounds multiply.

Given their complexity, I prefer recording audio instead of MIDI most of the time. When I’m ready to export or do some editing, I find working with audio provides greater flexibility.

    Utilizing Synth Editors

Using dedicated plugins for controlling hardware is a gamechanger. For example, with the Sub37, I can adjust parameters without leaving my desk:

    [Music Playback]

The same goes for the Nautilus; I can edit sounds directly from my computer, replicating what’s shown on the Nautilus screen.

In my setup, I also have access to NPC Beat software for controlling the Nord and other synths. However, most of the time, I use simple program changes via my Roland A88.

    Concluding Tips

As I wrap this up, keep in mind: when it comes to recording, I generally stick to audio tracks. This way, if I change my sound, I can quickly duplicate tracks and maintain structure within the DAW.

Remember, building a setup is a continuous process—I’m always learning and would love your insights. If you have suggestions or techniques that could enhance my process, feel free to drop them in the comments below!

Thanks for tuning in, and I'll catch you all later. Don’t forget to holler at your boy!
