Audiobook Behind the Scenes - #EvansBook ep. 73
Education
Introduction
Creating an audiobook is a unique and demanding process, and I wanted to provide you with a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like when I’m recording mine. Currently, I’m at Cherry Beach Studio in downtown Toronto, a space famously used by big-name recording artists like Justin Bieber, Ludacris, Rihanna, and 50 Cent. It’s exciting to think about the history of this place while I'm working on my own project.
During my lunch break, I’m enjoying some broccoli bread soup along with chicken fingers and veggies, which I need to power through the recording session. I want to take you on a little tour of the studio and share how things are set up.
The Setup
This is where my producer sits, equipped with all the necessary gear. We have another producer joining us via Skype, who provides real-time feedback and direction on my performance. The key area where the magic happens is where I stand—literally! I removed the chair because I find that standing up infuses me with energy, making my delivery more vibrant.
In front of me is the microphone with a windscreen to ensure crisp audio quality. I keep track of my progress using my notes, and I'm currently on page 164, which means I’m halfway through! Initially, we aimed to complete 80 pages last Monday; however, I managed to get through 120 pages on my first day. By the end of my lunch break, I will continue recording more pages.
To create a conducive recording environment, we’ve set up some soundproofing equipment. While I wear headphones to hear my producer's instructions, I’m able to stay focused on the task at hand. Recording an audiobook can be taxing on the voice, but I find it to be incredibly rewarding. I feel a deep connection with the material, channeling the energy of listeners who will eventually enjoy my work during their commutes or workouts.
One quirky aspect of the studio recording experience is how hot it gets inside. There’s only one vent, and we have to keep external noise to a minimum for the best sound quality. Fortunately, I wore shorts that can be easily removed if necessary—adapting to the warm conditions enhances my creativity and performance.
Wrapping Up the Session
I just wrapped up the recording session, and we took an extra half hour beyond our target to finish up. I’m thrilled that we completed the whole project in just two days instead of three, ensuring I won’t have to return next week unless there are some technical pickups needed. This process has been exhilarating, especially as I can hear the love and passion poured into this book. If listeners apply even a fraction of the insights from the book, I believe it will lead to significant changes in their lives and businesses.
From my time in the studio, I can confidently say that this audiobook is going to be something special. I'm anticipating great feedback, especially from those who have the e-book. Overall, I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!
Now, I need to rush home as I promised to bring back chicken fingers to a friend. I’m excited about the feedback from today’s session, and I hope for more smooth sailing as we continue the editing process. Despite the challenges, this journey is one I cherish, and I can't wait to share this book with the world.
