The August 2024 Regular Board of Education Meeting took place with several key topics on the agenda ranging from the local tax rate, new staff introductions, updates on school construction projects, transportation, and more.
During the meeting, it was discussed that the local revenue collection would be based on the assessed valuation (AV) multiplied by the tax rate. The estimated collections, assuming 100% collection rates, would amount to $ 13.6 million. The tax rate for FY 2025 was proposed to be $ 0.445, consistent with the previous year. The breakdown included a proposed incidental fund tax rate of $ 0.32392, zero in the teacher fund, $ 0.9995 in the capital projects fund, and $ 0.21 in debt service, culminating in a total tax rate of $ 0.44487. A motion was passed unanimously by the board to set the tax rate.
The meeting also highlighted the introduction of new staff members across various programs and grades within the school district. Building leaders introduced new educators, including Ashley Wen in Early Childhood, Miss Car Foster in second grade, and several others. The new hires brought diverse experiences to their roles, enhancing educational offerings for students.
Bobby Wright from the construction team provided updates on the ongoing construction projects at the high school and East Elementary. The high school project is entering its final phases, with finishes being applied and exterior work ongoing. The first areas are expected to be completed and ready for furniture move-in by October. The East edition will include four new classrooms while allowing room for future expansion.
In terms of transportation, Jeremy updated the board regarding student ridership, which has increased over the years with 1,235 students expected to ride this year. Echo Ride, the transportation service, is focusing on safety training for drivers and boasts a 100% safety rating without any student injuries last year. Changes in routing and service were discussed, especially with the upcoming new high school opening.
The board reviewed bus routes, which reflect average ride times of 35 to 50 minutes. Despite being down 1.5 drivers, Echo Ride has managed to maintain operations effectively. With discussions ongoing about potentially adding routes or altering schedules, the board approved the 2024-2025 bus routes presented.
The consent agenda covered crucial employment reports and was also unanimously accepted by the board.
The meeting concluded with a motion to enter an executive session for legal discussions. Members were aware of the need for confidentiality regarding sensitive topics.
