Gaming

Introduction

Introduction

Hey, guys! Today, we're diving into an updated tutorial all about installing custom avatars in Beat Saber. If you’ve been following my previous guides, you would know that we used to wait for custom avatars to be uploaded to Mod Assistant every time there was a new Beat Saber update. Well, things have changed, and you now have to download them manually. Let me walk you through how to install the custom avatar mod, download avatars, and the reasons behind this manual process.

Step-by-Step Guide

Downloading Required Files

First, you will need to download two zip files: DynamicOpenVR and BSaberCustomAvatars. Ensure you always download the most recent release. Links can be found in the description.

Locating Your Beat Saber Folder

You'll need to locate your Beat Saber installation folder:

  • For Oculus: Go to Library, click the three dots at the bottom right of the game, select Details, copy the location, and paste it into your file folder.
  • For Steam: Go to Library, right-click on the game, select Properties, under Local Files, hit Browse Local Files, copy the file path, and paste it into your folder.

Another method is using the Mod Assistant:

  • Open Mod Assistant
  • Go to the Options tab
  • Click Open Folder

Ensure that all necessary boxes are checked, especially under 1-click installs, and make sure the file path points directly to your Beat Saber folder.

Installing DynamicOpenVR

  1. Open both the DynamicOpenVR and BSaberCustomAvatars zip files.
  2. Drag the DynamicOpenVR folder into the Beat Saber main folder.
  3. Enter into both libs folders (inside DynamicOpenVR and Beat Saber) and copy the DLL file to the main folder.
  4. Do the same for the plugins folder – transfer the DLL file.

Installing Custom Avatars

  1. If you haven’t downloaded any avatars before, simply drop the custom avatars folder directly into the main Beat Saber folder.
  2. If you already have a custom avatars folder filled with avatars, open the new custom avatars folder, highlight all files, and drop them into your existing custom avatars folder in the main folder.
  3. You might get a notification to replace existing files; just click OK.

Finalizing Installation

  1. Open the DynamicOpenVR folder in both the secondary and main folders.
  2. Copy all content within actions and binding folders into the main folder.

Downloading and Installing Avatars

  1. Visit BSaber.com and navigate to the Plugins tab, then click on Avatar.
  2. Browse through the available avatars or search for a specific one you like.
  3. Click on Install, which uses the one-click install feature if you enabled it in Mod Assistant.

Additional Tools

  • Camera Plus Mod: Useful if you want to record avatars and upload gameplay on YouTube. Tutorial link is in the description.
  • OBS Studio: A free and easy-to-use recording tool.

Why Manual Installation Is Necessary

To shed light on why manual installation is required, I found some information from a knowledgeable Beat Saber community member named ProULXs. Here's what they said:

  • Until Dynamic OpenVR gets rid of its requirement or sees a lot of improvements, it can't be uploaded to Mod Assistant.
  • Dynamic OpenVR requires Oculus users who run SteamVR to enable VR mode but isn't equal to all users.
  • Consequently, manual download is necessary.
  • For Windows Mixed Reality users, an extra binding file must be installed, which isn't yet in Beta 4 but will be in Beta 5.

Conclusion

I hope this guide helps you successfully install and enjoy custom avatars in Beat Saber. If you have any questions or feedback, please leave a comment. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more tutorials. Follow me on Twitter for updates on my next video. Peace out!
