After graduating from high school, many find solace in the hangout culture. For instance, I transitioned into being a full-fledged "tambay" alongside my friends after school. We frequently gathered at my friend's house, which was dubbed as our "tambayan," after his parents went back to the province. Our lives revolved around simple pleasures, like playing cards. We often played "pusoy dos," where the stakes were low and laughter was high, culminating in the humorous tradition of a gentle slap on the face for losers—only as a joke, of course!
Limited by finances, we borrowed a PlayStation from a friend to immerse ourselves in gaming. This became a well-organized affair as we scheduled our gaming sessions, frequently passing control back and forth while vying for the next go. Our hangouts weren't just limited to gaming; we shared a passion for anime, too. We often bought pirated CDs for a mere Php20 to Php50 and sometimes faced the disappointment of poor quality. Yet, we could binge-watch 24 episodes in a single day.
Drawing anime characters became another popular pastime, and we had fun sketching our favorites during our hangouts. Conversations were light, laughter was abundant, and life seemed simple. However, this carefree attitude came with its own set of challenges, mainly revolving around finances. With minimal allowances and no jobs, we often found ourselves scavenging food from our families. I remember times when my parents would catch me "borrowing" food and teasingly question my intentions. This led to some clever excuses about community contributions.
Ultimately, one cannot forget the importance of balancing leisure with responsibilities. While hanging out can be a means of escaping stress or boredom, it's crucial to also lend a helping hand at home—whether that involves doing dishes, helping with cooking, or simply being present for your parents after a long day at work.
Thus, being a tambay isn’t merely about idleness. It represents a phase in life full of explorations and self-discovery, but also a responsibility towards family and society, reinforcing the old adage that balance is key.
