Building a DIY Recording Studio in my APARTMENT for UNDER $ 500! Audiobook recording on a budget!

Greetings friends and fellow aliens! Welcome to my latest article where I’m going to take you through my process of creating a DIY recording studio for under $ 500! Whether you want to record YouTube videos, podcasts, or an audiobook, this guide covers everything you need to know about upping your production quality on a budget.

Studio Tours and Initial Setups

I've relocated to New Hampshire and set up a new home office on the third floor, right by a bustling state highway. My first challenge? Noise. From trucks and motorcycles to everyday traffic, noise can make recording difficult. Despite the noisy environment and challenges with weather (I’m recording on the 4th of July with windows open and fans running due to the heat!), I was determined to make this recording studio work.

Here’s a quick tour of my office and recording setup:

  • Office Overview: My office isn’t fully decorated yet, but I have some cool memorabilia and posters, including my Space Pew Pew poster.
  • Noise Challenges: With the highway right outside, I need to minimize ambient noise as much as possible.
  • Cute Distractions: Even my adorable but sleeping cat, who needs to remain quiet during my recordings!

The Equipment Breakdown

Let's dive into the equipment that all contributed to enhancing the audio quality without breaking the bank:

  • Foam Panels: I created a false wall using foamcore poster boards ($ 2 each) with foam tiles stuck on them ($ 30 for a pack). Total cost: Under $ 50.
  • Microphone Shield: A microphone shield that helps with background noise reduction, costing around $ 30.
  • Mic Stand and Headphones: Mic stand for $ 20 and headphones for $ 15.
  • Mixer Board: This $ 50 mixer offers a clean signal path and provides 48V phantom power for the microphone.
  • Digital Audio Recorder: A Tascam DR-5 audio recorder ($ 100) for high-definition audio recording.

The Recording Process

After setting up, I encountered a few unexpected issues like inadequate camera battery and standing discomfort due to back issues. To overcome these hurdles:

  • Tripod and Keyboard Setup: A tripod for holding the phone and a Bluetooth keyboard to scroll through the script hands-free.
  • Adjustable Chair: I swapped to a quiet, fold-out chair to avoid noise during recording.

By addressing these challenges with simple, cost-effective solutions, I managed to secure everything resulting in a favorable recording setup.

Switching to Good Audio

By now, you're likely excited to hear the difference between the initial and improved audio quality. Once everything was in place and settings adjusted, the recording was significantly clearer.

Post-Production Tips

Using Adobe Audition, I managed the post-production process by:

  • Editing redundant or problematic sections.
  • Modulating the voice where necessary by adjusting the pitch.

The goal was to make minimal adjustments in post-production, ensuring the recorded audio is as clean as possible.

Final Thoughts

Creating a home studio on a budget might come with its own set of challenges, but with a bit of ingenuity, the right set of tools, and proper planning, high-quality recordings are very achievable.

FAQ

Q1: What kind of microphone should I use for budget audio recording? A1: Look for a cardioid microphone, like the Audio Technica mic I used, which focuses on capturing sound from the front while reducing background noise.

Q2: How important are foam panels in a recording studio? A2: Foam panels are crucial for reducing echo and ambient noise. They help create a sound-dampening environment, which is essential for clear recordings.

Q3: How can I manage unexpected issues like equipment failure during a recording? A3: Always double-check all equipment before starting. Have backup batteries, extra cables, and be ready to find creative solutions on the spot.

Q4: What software do you recommend for post-production editing? A4: Adobe Audition is a powerful tool for editing and enhancing audio. It allows you to cut sections, modulate voices, and apply various effects to improve audio quality.

Q5: How can I record in a noisy environment? A5: Use a high-quality microphone with a polar pattern that minimizes background noise, employ shielding like a mic shield, and create a soundproof space with foam panels or acoustic curtains.
