Can AI Make My Videos For Me? (If Hasbro use it, why not me?)

Introduction

Creating engaging content for platforms like YouTube can often be a labor-intensive process. It involves brainstorming topics, recording footage, and editing—all of which require substantial effort and time. Recently, I found myself reflecting on just how much work goes into producing these videos, from coordinating with my colleague, Tui, who manages the technical aspects, to the endless tasks of email communications, editing, and ensuring everything looks perfect.

In light of this, I wondered if there might be an easier way to streamline my video production process. Enter: artificial intelligence (AI). While AI can be a contentious topic within many creative communities, my intention was not to plagiarize or misuse anyone's content. Instead, I envisioned a scenario where AI could assist in creating my videos—essentially producing content with minimal effort on my part.

The AI Experiment

To put this plan into action, the first step was deciding on a topic. Typically, this can take days of scrolling through YouTube, absorbing ideas from more experienced creators before settling on a suitable theme. However, for this venture, I turned to ChatGPT. I prompted it with, "What are ten D&D YouTube video ideas featuring hot takes?" The AI generated a range of thought-provoking subjects, from the overrated nature of high-level D&D play to critiques on dungeon crawls and class structures in the game.

Eventually, I decided to leverage some ongoing discussions in the community surrounding Hasbro’s potential use of AI in creating and marketing Dungeons & Dragons content. I thought it would be a fitting and meta topic to fully produce an AI-generated video exploring why this approach might be beneficial.

Next, I used ChatGPT to draft a 500-word script centered around this premise. Once the script was ready, I took on the challenge of voicing it. To replicate my vocal style, Tui and I utilized Eleven Labs, where we uploaded audio samples of myself for cloning purposes. After some initial tests, we generated an AI version of my voice.

The subsequent step involved recording the script with this AI voice. Following this, we sourced images from my previous videos for the visual framework and transferred everything to Runway, an AI platform that could sync my lip movements with the audio. The final visual elements and alternative shots proposed in the script were fed into this software alongside the audio to produce a complete video.

In terms of sound, we composed an original soundtrack using AI-generated music from Suno, with a few prompts for orchestral rock as well as light jazz. This step further added a unique element to the video.

Finally, once all elements were combined, Tui compiled everything to produce the finished product: a completely AI-generated video discussing Hasbro's AI endeavors.

The Result

What emerged was a video that articulately discussed the potential merits of using AI in Dungeons & Dragons, highlighting how it can streamline processes for Dungeon Masters and enhance creativity in game design. By suggesting that AI could assist rather than replace human efforts, the video posited a positive perspective on integrating technology into the tabletop gaming world.

This journey into AI-driven video creation left me pondering the future of content creation. If larger corporations like Hasbro are embracing AI, why can’t I? The takeaway from this experiment is that AI could indeed become a tool to complement and elevate the creative process rather than supplant it.
