CANVA TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNERS 2024 (How to start using Canva step by step)

Education

Introduction

If you're involved in designing online content—be it social media posts, selling digital products, or more—chances are, you've heard of Canva. In my opinion, Canva is the most beginner-friendly and user-intuitive design tool available. There are many graphic design software options, but none match Canva's budget-friendliness and ease of use.

In this article, I will provide a comprehensive Canva tutorial for beginners. We'll cover how to start a project, use the editor, explore Canva's content library, and edit elements, text, and more. If you're new to Canva and need a basic step-by-step walkthrough, this guide is for you.

Starting a Project on Canva

When you want to start a new project in Canva, head over to the top right corner where it says "Create a design." You can either type in what you're looking for or choose from one of Canva's suggested types of canvases. This step involves selecting your project's size and orientation:

  • Instagram Post: 1080 by 1080 pixels
  • Instagram Story: 1080 by 1920 pixels
  • Flyer: 8.5 by 11 inches

You can also choose a custom size or import a file if you have a specific photo or design you want to edit.

Inside the Canva Editor

Upon selecting a canvas, you’ll enter the Canva editor where your workspace includes various design tools:

  1. Elements Tab: Access graphics, illustrations, icons, photographs, and more.
  2. Text Tab: Add custom text boxes or use Canva's font combinations.
  3. Draw Tab: Freehand draw directly on your design.

Exploring Canva’s Content Library

The Elements tab lets you search for specific visuals, such as "flower" graphics or photographs. You can filter results by categories like graphics, photos, videos, and shapes.

Using Shapes and Editing Elements

Choose a shape, drag it into your design workspace, and resize or move it as needed. Edit components like color, border weight, and transparency from the top menu. Functional guides appear to help you align elements as you move them around.

Working with Photographs

Upload a photo and edit it by using effects like blur or background remover (Canva Pro feature). You can also fit photos into unique shapes using frames.

Adding and Editing Text

Add text boxes and select your favorite fonts. Customize font size, color, and effects (e.g., shadow, hollow, splice). Group multiple elements to move them together, or align and space out text and elements evenly.

Working with Fonts

Ensure all elements and fonts are seamlessly integrated using features like the color picker and transparency adjustments.

Uploads and Drawing Tools

Upload your own photos or graphics under the "Uploads" tab. Use the "Draw" tab to add personalized, freehand drawings to your designs.

Finalizing and Downloading Your Design

Once your design is ready, click "Share" in the top right corner to access download options. Choose your file type (JPEG, PNG, PDF, etc.) and check your download settings. PDFs are best for print due to higher DPI (300), while JPEG and PNG are suitable for web use (96 DPI).
