Why CapCut?

After being on YouTube for over 14 years, I can confidently say that CapCut is one of the easiest video editing software options out there—and I've tried quite a few! The simplicity and free access make it a fantastic choice for beginners.

Getting Started with CapCut

Once you’ve downloaded CapCut onto your computer, you're ready to begin editing your first project. Here’s a quick guide to get you started:

  1. Create a New Project: Click on "Create Project" to begin. You’ll be presented with a blank canvas.

  2. Modify Project Details: Head over to the "Details" section and click "Modify" to name your project (e.g., "Stan Vlog"). Do not forget to match the frame rate of your project with the frame rate of your footage—this ensures smooth playback.

  3. Import Your Footage: Click the plus sign to import your videos, audio, images, etc. Alternatively, you can drag and drop files directly into CapCut.

  4. Organize Your Media: It’s helpful to create folders (e.g., A-Roll, B-Roll) to keep your content organized. Right-click to create new folders, then drag and drop your files into the appropriate sections.

Editing Basics

Your main editing area is the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

  • Add Clips to the Timeline: You can drag your clips from the media library to the timeline. Alternatively, you can click the plus sign next to each clip.

  • Adjust the Video Dimensions: Adjust the aspect ratio of your video depending on the final platform. Use 16:9 for YouTube and 9:16 for TikTok or Instagram Stories.

  • Zoom in and Out of Your Timeline: Use Control + Plus (+) to zoom in and Control + Minus (-) to zoom out for more precise edits.

Basic Functions

  • Splitting Clips: To split a clip, select the timeline marker and press "Split" or use the shortcut Control + B.

  • Delete Clips: If you want to delete a portion, highlight the clip and press the Delete key or Backspace.

  • Adjusting Audio: Click on the audio clip to adjust the volume. You can fade in or fade out the audio for smoother transitions.

Adding B-Roll and Music

B-Roll enhances your story and should support your A-Roll. You can find quality B-Roll footage from stock media subscription services like Storyblocks.

  • Adding Music: You can either import your own audio or select from CapCut's library by dragging and dropping it into the timeline below your video clips. Ensure the audio complements the dialogue level.

Applying Text and Effects

To add text, click on the plus sign, double-click to edit it, and adjust the style, size, or positioning as per your needs. Similar processes apply to adding stickers and effects.

  • Filters and Adjustments: You can apply various filters and adjustments to either individual clips or the entire project.

Exporting Your Video

Before you export, make sure:

  • Your project is named and saved correctly.
  • Select the correct export resolution (I recommend 1080p for most social media).
  • Ensure the format is set to MP4.

When everything looks good, hit "Export," and your video will be ready to share.

Bonus Tip

If you experience lag while editing, switch your preview quality to "Best Performance" in the player settings for improved editing efficiency.
