Claude can now use a computer - Set up and test out Anthropic's AI Agent

Science & Technology

Introduction

Hi there! My name is Angel, and on this channel, we explore AI, technology, business, and personal growth. In today's episode, we're diving into Anthropic's recent release called Computer Use, which has been highlighted to me by one of our wonderful subscribers, George. Thanks, George, for keeping me updated!

What is Computer Use?

Computer Use is fundamentally a significant advancement in the field of AI agents, developed by Anthropic. An AI agent typically refers to AI systems that can be given a set of tools to perform various tasks as requested. This release is revolutionary as it marks a notable step forward by allowing AI agents to operate on a computer. This means AI can now browse the web, control the mouse, use applications, type, and conduct Google searches. Consequently, it automates complex tasks that previously required human intervention. This functionality offers a more user-friendly alternative compared to spending hours trying to configure automation tools like Make.com or Zapier.

While still in beta, Computer Use is described in Anthropic's documentation, which I've provided for further reading. Though it might not be perfect, the technological advancements are indeed exciting and bring both opportunities and challenges. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, we’ll embrace this pioneering tool and explore its potential.

Setting Up Computer Use

Anthropic's documentation offers a handy reference implementation to help get started. Below are the steps to set up Computer Use:

  1. Download Docker: If you haven’t already, you’ll need Docker, which lets you run applications in isolated environments known as containers. This enhances security by ensuring the AI operations do not interfere with your host system. You may need to create an account after installation.

  2. Get an API Key: Navigate to the Anthropic console (console.anthropic.com) to obtain an API key. Once you generate this key, be sure to save it securely.

  3. Run the Application: Open your terminal (Command + Spacebar on Mac) and enter the command provided (replacing my API key with yours). After running this command, you'll receive a link to the Computer Use demo that you can open in your browser.

Testing Computer Use

Once set up, I initiated a couple of test cases to explore its capabilities, particularly focusing on the spreadsheet feature.

  1. Trip Planning Example: I prompted the AI to assist me in planning a 5-day trip to Japan from LAX to NRT, requesting to find the cheapest flights and four-star hotels, and to generate an itinerary in a spreadsheet. It successfully created a rudimentary spreadsheet tracking my travel plans and hotel details. The UI experienced some bugs, but the AI persevered, trying different methods to obtain the required information.

  2. Finding Influencers: My second query involved generating a list of ten influencers along with their social media accounts. The initial response from the AI highlighted ethical and legal considerations regarding email addresses, which was appreciated, so I tweaked my prompt. After a few adjustments, it managed to provide social media links, demonstrating the importance of specific wording when structuring prompts.

Conclusion

Through these examples, I realized that, while Computer Use is a significant step forward in AI capabilities, it isn't flawless. A key takeaway is that effective prompting is crucial for the successful operation of these tools. As we conclude this exploration, I'm excited to see how you might use Computer Use. Feel free to leave a comment below sharing your thoughts and innovative ideas!
