Introduction

Welcome to this tutorial! We'll be working in Compressor, but first, let's start in Final Cut Pro to show how to get to Compressor. Here, I have some footage from a car commercial I shot. We’ll set an endpoint and an out point as if this was our final project and we wanted to convert it to a different format.

Setting In and Out Points:

  1. Set an endpoint and out point.
  2. Go to File > Export > Using Compressor.

By doing this, Final Cut Pro will pull the footage into Compressor.

Compressor Overview:

  • Preview: You don't need to worry too much about this unless you are exporting multiple formats simultaneously.
  • Inspector: Displays details about the sequence like length and other specifics.
  • Destinations:
    • Apple Destinations: Saves back to the source location, desktop, custom folders, servers, or local hard drives.

Process of Exporting in Compressor:

  1. Selecting Destination:

    • Drag the desired destination from your custom list or default list.
    • If you need to delete an unwanted destination, click the minus sign next to it.
    • Add new destinations by clicking the plus sign and selecting the desired path.
  2. Settings:

    • Go to the Settings tab to choose the export type.
    • For instance, if sending a file to Jeremy at Murray State, drag the relevant MPEG setting.
    • Rename the output for clarity (e.g., car_commercial_jeremy.mpeg).
  3. Types of Outputs:

    • Apple Devices: Export for Apple TV, iPhone, etc.
    • DVD Options: Options for different encode speeds and quality lengths (e.g., Best Quality 120 minutes, Fastest Encode 90 minutes).
  4. Example:

    • Export to Desktop:
      • Drag settings for MPEG export to the desktop.
      • Name the file appropriately.
    • Export for DVD:
      • Choose Fastest Encode 90 minutes for shorter projects.
      • Split audio and video tracks if needed.
      • Name both tracks clearly.
      • Click Submit when done.
