Corridor Performance Best Practices 04: Clipping in OpenRoads Designer

    [Music]

So let's talk about clipping. Clipping does take processing time and the more clipping that you do, the slower it can get because it's having to go out there and figure out how to clip that corridor at every place you've assigned a clipping element. One of the things for intersections and driveways you can do to avoid clipping is to use template drops.

In my corridor here, where the intersection is located, I've created a new template drop and I edited it. What I did was take off everything to the right of the edge of the pavement where my civil cell ties in, and then I limited the range of it to where the curve of the intersection starts and ends on the other side. This way, it's not having to do clipping in that area.

I've got this example right here that shows this. If I go up here and edit this template drop in this specific area where my intersection is, you can see that I have nothing on the side where the intersection is, outside the edge of pavement. This means it's not processing that the civil cell is not clipping the corridor, thus speeding up that area because I'm not having to create it and then clip it out.

If you look at the template on the upstream or downstream side of it, it is just my normal template that I was using right there.

    FAQ

Q1: What is the main issue with clipping in OpenRoads Designer?
A1: Clipping takes processing time, and the more clipping you do, the slower the performance, as it has to figure out how to clip the corridor at every joint.

Q2: How can you avoid clipping for intersections and driveways?
A2: By using template drops. Take off elements to the right of the edge of pavement where the civil cell ties in and limit the range where the curve on the intersection starts and ends.

Q3: How does template drop improve performance in OpenRoads Designer?
A3: It prevents the need for clipping in areas where it's not required, thus speeding up the processing time and improving performance.

Q4: What should you do to see changes in the intersection area?
A4: Edit the template drop in that particular area and ensure nothing is on the side of the intersection outside the edge of pavement.

Q5: Where can you find the unchanged normal template in the corridor?
A5: You can find your normal template upstream or downstream of the intersection area.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, by manipulating template drops effectively, you can significantly enhance the processing performance when dealing with intersections and driveways in OpenRoads Designer. Clipping should be minimized to ensure smooth operation and faster processing times.
