Create a 3d Model using your Phone! PolyCam 3D Scan Tutorial
Education
Introduction
Creating 3D models has never been easier, especially now that you can do it with just your smartphone! In this guide, we'll learn how to create detailed 3D models using a technique called photogrammetry, specifically utilizing the PolyCam app. Whether you’re on Android or iOS, you can follow along and create stunning models that are compatible with various rendering software like Lumion, D5 Render, Unreal Engine, and Corona Render.
What is Photogrammetry?
Photogrammetry is a photography mapping technique that allows you to capture multiple images of an object from various angles. When these images are processed, they translate into a detailed 3D model. Companies like Quixel and their Megascans product leverage this technique, providing highly realistic and textured models ranging from small plants to massive cliffs.
Getting Started with PolyCam
- Download the App: First, download the PolyCam app from the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android).
- Create an Account: Open the app and create an account. This will allow you to save your models in the cloud.
Interface Navigation
Upon opening the app, you’ll see the interface with a light bulb icon that offers usage tips. To achieve the best results, aim to take at least 80 photos. If you'd like manual control over your shots, switch from auto to manual shooting mode.
Preparing to Capture
For optimal results:
- Object Placement: Position the object in an area where you can easily move around it. I recommend a round kitchen tray—affordable and great for photographing small to medium objects.
- Lighting Considerations: If you have access to a softbox, utilize it to minimize harsh shadows. Alternatively, natural light next to a window works well.
- Background Preparation: If possible, shoot against a white wall or place a piece of paper behind the object to help the software isolate it better.
Capturing the Photos
Place the object in the center and securely hold your phone while rotating around it to take pictures from various angles. Don’t forget to include close-ups to capture intricate details. After capturing your images, review them in the app and delete any that are out of focus.
Processing Your 3D Model
Once you’ve taken your photos, select the processing type suited to your needs—"Full" for rendering purposes, as it provides a higher poly count and better texture resolution. If you don't want the background included, enable object masking. Then you can upload your images to start the processing.
After processing is complete, you will see a detailed 3D model on your phone. Now, head to polycam.com and log into your account to access your models. You can inspect and export your model in formats like FBX or OBJ, usually preferring both—FBX for textures applied and OBJ for separate textures.
Importing to 3D Software
Open your exported model in a 3D modeling application, deleting any unnecessary parts, and then import it into your desired 3D rendering software. In my case, I’ll use D5 Render and see the textures applied flawlessly in no time!
Now you have a fantastic 3D model created quickly and efficiently using just your phone.
Conclusion
The PolyCam app allows for up to 100 free captures, or you can subscribe for additional features such as a monthly quota of 154 captures. I hope you found this tutorial helpful! Feel free to share your 3D scans with me on Instagram, and I’ll feature them in my stories.
