Creating Character Emotions with Minimax & Hailuo AI Video Generator

Film & Animation

Introduction

In the ever-evolving landscape of AI technology, creating realistic character emotions in animated features has become more accessible with platforms like Minimax and Hailuo AI. Recently, I embarked on a testing journey to explore how Minimax handles the emotional representation of animated characters through the integration of images and video generation.

The Experiment

I began by creating an image in Midjourney featuring a princess to serve as our test subject. After generating a few scenes, I found a particular image that stood out, exemplifying the look I wanted for the character. This image was then downloaded and prepared for upload into Minimax.

Upon uploading the image, I ran it through Minimax with the prompt: "She looks worried and starts to cry." This particular rendering cost me 30 credits. While waiting for the results, I decided to conduct additional tests using similar prompts but varying the emotional expressions. My goal was to see how effectively the AI could portray distinct emotions such as happiness and sadness.

Quick Results

The queue time was short, and within moments, the rendering was complete. I retrieved the results and analyzed each scene:

  1. Happy Emotion: The first video showcased the character looking happy and smiling. The final output was stunning, showcasing intricate facial movements and expressions that gave depth to the animation.

  2. Sad Emotion: The second video intended to depict sadness with tears streaming down her face. It successfully captured the emotion, though achieving realistic tear representation remains a challenge in AI-generated images.

  3. Worried Emotion: The last video aimed for a worried expression, accompanied by crying. While there were elements of realism, the character's facial features took on a somewhat Pixar-like quality, making it feel slightly animated rather than human. Nevertheless, the tear effects were discernible, marking a noticeable improvement.

Conclusion

Overall, Minimax's capabilities in portraying character emotions were commendable, particularly with the smiling scene which looked almost lifelike. While the projects are still a work in progress and certain aspects, like achieving truly realistic tears, remain evasive, the potential for future iterations is promising. I look forward to conducting more tests and utilizing this technology for upcoming scenes, capturing the full spectrum of human emotions in animation.
