Creator Weekly: YouTube Shorts polls, Canva updates, AdSense blocking controls

Entertainment

Introduction

Welcome to Creator Weekly Live for October 27th, 2024! I’m Peggy K, and today, we have numerous updates to share from various platforms, including YouTube Shorts, YouTube monetization, Canvas new features, a Google Photos update, and some social media news.

Halloween Excitement

Before we dive into the updates, I want to say hello to everyone tuning in live. It's great to see you here! As Halloween approaches, I'm curious if you have any plans this year. While I’m not much into costumes, I really enjoy welcoming trick-or-treaters at my home. Big tech companies are also getting into the Halloween spirit by offering themed content, such as spooky backgrounds for Google Meet.

The spooky background features realism this year, along with fun Halloween themes. If you’re a content creator, consider using common hashtags like “Halloween with Shorts” on YouTube, even though some spammy content doesn’t quite fit the theme. TikTok also boasts a range of Halloween-related hashtags, allowing you to join in on the fun, either by creating your own content or simply enjoying others'.

YouTube Shorts Updates

Let's switch gears and discuss some exciting updates from YouTube Shorts.

First off, YouTube has introduced a new feature that enables creators to add polls within their shorts. This feature will be rolling out soon, allowing creators to engage viewers with interactive content. These polls can be created using the YouTube mobile shorts editor, and you can view total votes and percentages of responses. However, it's essential to note that this feature is limited to one-minute shorts only.

Next, there's a significant update for creators in the YouTube Partner Program regarding ad monetization. You can now manage which categories of ads are permitted on your channel directly through YouTube Studio. Previously, these controls were only accessible through AdSense. This important transition means that you can limit sensitive categories like alcohol, gambling, and weight loss advertisements directly from your YouTube settings.

Canva’s New Features

Moving on to Canva, which recently announced a bundle of updates referred to as “dropped over H.” Many of these updates are based on generative AI technology. A notable enhancement is Canva's updated text-to-image generator, powered by Leonardo AI’s Phoenix model, promising improved image generation capabilities.

Another exciting feature is the rollout of styled automated captions for videos. These captions can now be customized in terms of font and size, facilitating accessibility and enhancing the viewing experience.

Canva is also integrating with Google Workspace, enabling users to create sensible workflows between Canva and Google applications like Docs and Gmail. Users can access their Canva creations directly within these apps, streamlining the process of using design assets across platforms.

Other Updates

This week, there are some new features on Threads, Meta's platform for text-based posting. A dedicated page for creators has launched, serving as a hub for managing comments and understanding platform features better. Additionally, Threads has introduced analytics, allowing users to track their account stats on mobile devices—a feature previously only available on desktop.

Lastly, Google Photos has made strides to enhance transparency around AI editing by including new metadata that specifies if images were generated or edited with AI tools. This is part of ongoing efforts to standardize metadata related to AI modifications.
