DALL-E 2 vs. Midjourney | Which AI image creation tool is better for you?
Howto & Style
Introduction
Hello and welcome back to another deep dive into the world of AI image creation tools. After navigating a flurry of deadlines recently, I'm thrilled to finally explore DALL-E 2, an advanced AI image generation tool that recently got approved for my daily use account. For context, DALL-E 2 is a commercial, sophisticated upgrade from DALL-E Mini, which is a free version. I also want to set DALL-E 2 against Midjourney, another popular AI image creation tool, to see how they compare.
New Members and Community Updates
Before we dive into the comparison, I'd like to take a moment to welcome our new community members: Rafael F Direta and Russian Yang. It's great to have you! I'm also excited to continue our journey with long-term member Melvina, as well as comma 45 and Mohsin Hassan. Thank you all for supporting the channel. Exploring DALL-E 2 and Midjourney
I’ve been experimenting with both tools for a while now. The output from DALL-E 2 is intriguing, often producing a more traditional art feel. For our first test, I entered my name—“Philip”—in the style of “The Last Supper.” Instantly, DALL-E generated a varied set of images, each distinct enough to download or modify. DALL-E 2 provides the flexibility to edit facial features or other elements, a feature not available in Midjourney.
Midjourney, on the other hand, focuses on variations and allows upscaling images in a different manner, emphasizing design aesthetics. Each tool generates impressive results, but it is crucial to explore the strengths and weaknesses of both.
Aspect Ratio Limitations
One feature that stands out is DALL-E's limitation on aspect ratios; it only produces square images. In contrast, Midjourney enables users to specify custom aspect ratios which is tremendously advantageous for landscape formats.
Realism vs. Aesthetic Design
When it comes to designs for something like a “post-industrial architectural landscape,” DALL-E 2’s images appeared realistic yet lacked depth in creativity. Midjourney generated significantly more artistic interpretations, leaning towards a graphic design aesthetic.
Next, we attempted to create plan drawings. DALL-E 2 managed to create a layout resembling a master plan, while Midjourney's outcomes were more abstract and chaotic.
Again, the two produced vastly different results when I tasked them with generating simple food items, such as banana bread and a cute dog in a swimsuit. DALL-E 2 shone in these tasks, generating hyper-realistic images that could easily pass for photographs. Meanwhile, Midjourney’s outputs were artistically pleasing but not as realistic.
Logo Creation
In my final set of tests, I asked both tools to generate logos, including a design for a chili sauce. While both responded well, DALL-E stood out with more coherent imagery, indicating an understanding of context and branding, whereas Midjourney’s designs often felt too abstract.
In conclusion, both DALL-E 2 and Midjourney have their benefits and shortcomings. While DALL-E excels at realism and clarity, Midjourney thrives in stylistic representation and variety. Your choice ultimately depends on what you need from an AI image creation tool.
