Editing Action Clips For After Effects VFX Compositing
In this article, I'll walk you through how to composite The Inferno logo animation into a live-action footage using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Follow these steps closely for optimal results.
Step 1: Setting Up in Premiere Pro
In Premiere Pro, start a new project and name it Inferno Composition. Leave all other settings as default and hit Okay. Now, create a new sequence by navigating to File > New > Sequence, or use the shortcut Ctrl+N. Choose your desired resolution; for this tutorial, we’re using 1080p 16:9 at 30 frames per second (fps). Name the sequence and hit Okay again.
Navigate to where your footage is saved, select it all, and drag it into the Project Manager window. For more tips on using Premiere Pro, check out my beginner tutorial in the card above or via the link in the description.
Once all your footage is loaded into Premiere, drag and drop it into the timeline. To import footage quickly, you can double-click the Project Manager window, go to File > Import, or use Ctrl+I.
Step 2: Cutting and Managing Footage
For zooming into your footages, use the bar at the bottom, or hold the Alt key (Option on Mac) and use your mouse wheel. To start cutting, hit C to activate the Razor tool and V to switch back to the cursor. Scrub through your footage, make cuts using the Razor tool, and then delete unwanted sections by hitting Backspace.
Repeat this process until you’ve cut away all the unnecessary parts of your footage. To see your progress, press the Spacebar. In this case, we don’t need the audio, so mute it from the audio track.
Step 3: Linking to After Effects and Compositing
In the next tutorial, we'll show you how to link this sequence to Adobe After Effects and start compositing the Inferno animation with your live-action footage. Make sure to follow along by checking the tutorial in the card above.
