Empowering Girls in India
Entertainment
Introduction
Despite its rich culture and incredible beauty, over 40 million children in India live in dire circumstances, with millions growing up without any family support. Many of these children face abuse, malnutrition, early marriages, and unplanned pregnancies, leading to education being a lower priority for them. India, unfortunately, has the highest population of orphans in the world, which exacerbates these issues further.
Following numerous requests from viewers to visit India, we decided to embark on a journey that turned out to be unexpectedly impactful. During our travels, we collaborated with one of Bollywood's biggest stars and witnessed inspiring efforts by individuals striving to make a difference in their communities. This motivated us to engage in not just one, but two projects in India.
Upon our arrival in New Delhi, we met Dr. Modi, the founder of a remarkable organization aimed at uplifting orphaned and abandoned children. Dr. Modi recounted his experiences from childhood that ignited his passion for helping vulnerable children. He established Udan Care, where orphaned and abandoned children are paired with lifelong mentor parents—dedicated individuals who provide a nurturing family environment so these children can thrive.
Dr. Modi also initiated the Udan Shalini Fellowship Program in 2002, which seeks to empower girls from underserved backgrounds, helping them become self-sufficient and capable women who can contribute to a more equitable society. During our visit, we met Deepak, a mentor parent at one of Udan Care’s homes, who shared his inspiring journey and the financial struggles the organization constantly faces.
Among the many girls benefiting from this program is Shah, an ambitious young woman who, thanks to Udan Care, has dreams of becoming a fashion designer. After hard work and determination, Shah was accepted into the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology in Mumbai. Her journey of self-discovery and ambition showcases the immense potential within the girls at Udan Care.
Moved by their stories, we wanted to do something special for the girls. Darren, one of our team members, reached out to his friend Jacqueline Fernandez, a well-known Bollywood star, to bring joy and inspiration to the program. She visited the girls at Udan Care, surprising them and emphasizing the importance of education and self-belief.
Shah’s talent shone brightly as she designed a dress inspired by her favorite designer, Alexander McQueen. The dress would eventually be auctioned to benefit Udan Care, symbolizing the remarkable potential of the girls involved in the program. The collaboration with Jacqueline not only provided immediate joy but also aimed at sustainable support for the organization, ensuring the continuation of their invaluable work.
We were deeply inspired by Deepak’s dedication, and in a significant show of support, we committed to funding the operational costs of the Udan Care house for the coming year, as well as providing 280 scholarships that will help many young women gain mentoring and educational opportunities.
The impact of programs like Udan Care highlights the importance of community involvement and individual contributions in addressing broader societal issues, creating a ripple effect of positive change. As we backed these efforts, we recognized the profound difference a small act of kindness can have in shaping someone's life.
This inspiring journey in India is just the beginning, with more projects planned to broaden our involvement and impact. Each step taken towards empowering these girls represents hope and possibility in transforming lives, fostering an environment where they too can dream and succeed.
