Entertainment

Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Kathleen Jasper, and today we are going to work through the Praxis Teaching Reading exams, specifically 5205 and 5206. We will also touch upon the Foundations of Reading exam 190 in Texas, but the information provided here will be beneficial for any certification exam. If you are live, please let me know where you are joining us from, what test you are preparing for, and whether you have our book or not.

I am excited to see so many participants here today, including educators from various states such as Indiana, Tennessee, Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Alabama. If you are watching on social media, there is a link in the description which allows you to access the free study guide that comes with this webinar, as well as a reply link sent to you later.

About Me

Let me give you a quick overview of my background. I have been assisting teachers in passing their certification exams for the last 10 years. I transitioned into education through substitute teaching and eventually taught reading, biology, and English language arts at the high school level. After gaining experience in curriculum design and assessments, I shifted my focus to helping educators prepare for their certification exams.

I have published numerous books and resources on Amazon and offer various webinars to aid teachers in their exam preparation. The strategies I share today will not only help you pass your exams but will also be applicable when you're teaching your students.

Webinar Overview

Today, we'll dedicate our time to discussing the Teaching Reading exams 5205 and 5206. For those taking the Foundations of Reading exam, the concepts are very similar. Many state certifications require teachers to have reading endorsements as they recognize the critical importance of reading for all students.

Participants have varied experiences with these exams, some are retaking while others are preparing for the first time. If you're frustrated after a few attempts, I encourage you to approach the material from a fresh perspective, review your study guides, and think of new strategies.

Resources and Study Materials

While you can purchase our books on Amazon, signing up for the webinar offers a 20% discount on resources on my website. After the session, everything discussed will be emailed to you, including summaries and links to helpful videos.

The layout of our books is designed to guide you through content categories relevant to reading strategies, foundational skills, and assessments. We have extensive practice test questions and answer explanations which clarify the concepts discussed.

Instructional Strategies

  1. Phonological Awareness: This involves understanding larger units of sound in words and can be practiced through activities that isolate sounds, such as clapping syllables.

  2. Phonemic Awareness: This is more focused on individual sounds and is crucial for reading fluency.

  3. Phonics: Here we deal with letter-sound correspondence and rules that govern phonics.

  4. Fluency and Comprehension: Strategies to assist students in reading fluidly while understanding the material, including read-aloud think-aloud and using graphic organizers.

Constructed Response

You will likely face constructed response questions on the exam. I recommend preparing by identifying two effective strategies for each Reading skill area. For example, consider how you could use KWL charts to activate student knowledge.
