Gen-3 Alpha is WILD (and available now)

[Applause]

Hello everyone! Welcome back to "Learn How to Edit Stuff". My name is Ian, and as of today, Gen-3 Alpha is available to the general public that has a paid Runway account. I, for one, am very excited about it. If you don’t know what Gen-3 Alpha is and you’re watching this video anyway, first of all, thank you. Secondly, it is the newest generative video model available from Runway, powering all the Runway tools you know and love.

Of course, there’s more information available online at RunwayML.com if you want to dive into the technical details. But for this article, we're going to focus on showing rather than telling – though we will tell a bit later.

Let's kick things off with a banger montage of Gen-3 Alpha outputs.

So, how do you access Gen-3 Alpha? It’s very simple. From your paid Runway account:

  1. Go to the text or image to video tool.
  2. Select the Gen-3 Alpha model from the model drop-down at the top.
  3. Enter a prompt.

For example: "A cinematic FPV shot of a giant iceberg floating in Arctic waters. The camera quickly orbits the iceberg."

From here, you can select a 5-second or 10-second generation. Click generate. It takes approximately 60 seconds for a 5-second generation and 90 seconds for a 10-second generation, which is extremely fast considering the process involved. Currently, the resolution is at 720p at 24 frames per second, but future updates will likely allow for higher resolution features.

These incredible icebergs floating majestically through the frigid waters of the Arctic don’t actually exist. They were generated by the extraordinary video generation model called Gen-3 Alpha.

Literally all outputs are bangers, but as editors and content creators, why is this technology useful? For me and hopefully for you, there are many reasons why this technology is beneficial.

Here's a super practical example: Let's say I am working on a piece of content involving a scientist exploring the Arctic. There's interviews, B-roll of penguins, and more. But due to circumstances, the drone couldn't capture the desired Arctic landscape footage. With Gen-3 Alpha, I now have drone footage without needing a physical drone, a crew, or dealing with technical malfunctions.

By generating missing footage, we add tremendous value not just visually but also monetarily by saving on production costs.

Let’s try something more experimental: "Liquid simulation, black and red color palette. Wide shot of dynamic liquid floating in zero gravity. The camera zooms forward through the liquid."

Excellent! I’ve just crafted complex abstract visuals useful for any number of content needs. Without AI, this would require expert knowledge in Unreal Engine or Blender, robust computer specs, and potentially days to create. With Gen-3 Alpha, I did it in two minutes. Time is money, after all.

Using Gen-3 Alpha keeps me in a creative flow state longer by reducing the technical overhead required to produce high-quality visual effects.

Next, let’s explore generative VFX. For example: "Animated burning fire that's rapidly moving on a plain chroma key green background."

I've created visual effects assets that I can composite into any video without the hassle of searching for royalty-free elements. The ability to generate directly speeds up my workflow and keeps me creative.

When it comes to prompting inside of Gen-3 Alpha, detailed and descriptive inputs yield better results, but it works well with simple prompts too. For example, instead of just "a cat", try: "A front angle medium closeup of a tabby cat wearing a pristine white astronaut suit seated in the cockpit of a sleek rocket..."

Prompting Tips:

  1. Use film terminology (wide, closeup, macro, etc.).
  2. Include speed modifiers (hyperlapse, timelapse).
  3. Utilize color and lighting terms.
  4. Describe camera and subject action.

For example: "An angry mobster standing in an alleyway, his face very serious. Then confetti drops from the sky, turning his face from angry to excited."

If you need help with prompting:

  • Visit Help.RunwayML.com for the Gen-3 Alpha support article.
  • Explore Academy.Runway.com for in-depth tutorials.
  • Use large language models to convert simple prompts into detailed ones.

The bottom line is that Gen-3 Alpha is an incredibly versatile video generation model. Its potential use cases are vast and still being explored by the global community. Stay tuned for more updates and examples from Runway and my channel.
