Google Pixel 9 Review & FAQ | Can I recommend it

Science & Technology

Introduction

In this article, we will delve into the Google Pixel 9 smartphone, sharing insights based on over a week of personal experience with the device. The review will answer some frequently asked questions and give a clear understanding of my recommendation status for potential buyers.

Experience with Google Pixel 9

Having previously posted an unboxing video detailing the physical aspects of the Google Pixel 9, this article focuses on my real-world experience after extended use.

Battery Life

Starting with the battery, the Pixel 9 is equipped with a 4,700 mAh battery, and I have been pleasantly surprised by its performance. One of the most significant improvements in this iteration is the notable reduction in idle drain compared to earlier models. This Pixel maintains good standby time and delivers around 5.5 to 7 hours of screen-on time, depending on usage. For regular mixed usage, expect around 24 hours of performance easily.

Heating

Heating issues have been a prevalent concern among users, and I can understand why. Unlike the Pixel 9 Pro and Fold which remained cool during heavy use, the standard Pixel 9 tends to get considerably warmer. This is particularly evident during tasks like camera usage or heavy setups, as the back and railing of the phone can feel quite hot. The absence of a vapor chamber, which is present in the Pro variant, might be the reason for this heating. While the heating is slightly improved compared to the Pixel 8, it’s still a concern.

Modem and Connectivity

On the connectivity front, I’ve found no issues using the device with my SIM and WiFi. The new modem in the Pixel 9 seems to perform adequately, ensuring a smooth experience in terms of network connectivity.

Charging Speed

As for charging speed, the Pixel 9 supports decent charging capabilities, reaching approximately 50% in slightly over 30 minutes. Full charges, however, take around one and a half hours. While not industry-leading, it suits my charging habits just fine as I often charge the phone overnight.

AI Features

When it comes to AI features, tools like Pixel Screenshot and Pixel Studio come into play. The screenshot tool is exceptionally helpful in organizing captured images, while I find Pixel Studio to be a fun yet somewhat gimmicky feature. Google's Gemini Live performs comparatively well and proves useful for natural conversations, although Samsung’s AI integration seems better woven into various applications.

Gaming

For gamers, the Pixel 9 might not be the best choice. While it can run casual games like Call of Duty, it lacks support for the highest graphics settings available from other Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 models. Therefore, if gaming is your primary concern, consider alternative smartphones that are better suited for such tasks.

Camera Quality

The camera setup in the Pixel 9 is similar to the Pro series, minus the telephoto lens. The main and ultra-wide cameras perform excellently, with the ultra-wide offering surprisingly good quality despite some color shift issues. The digital zoom capability is satisfactory for regular use, but if optical zoom is a must, the Pro variant should be considered.

Recommendation

Now to tackle the pivotal question: Would I recommend the Pixel 9 to friends and family? Unfortunately, I find myself unable to recommend it fully due to the heating issue during intensive use. Although it's an excellent compact device, the lack of a vapor chamber leads me to suggest that potential buyers might consider waiting for the Pixel 9 Pro, which offers the superior thermal management essential for a more premium experience.
