Google’s NEW AI Search Engine Takes The Industry By STORM! (NOW RELEASED)

Google is rolling out their new generative experience, and they have just given us the first look at their new search engine that they plan to launch later this year. Embrace yourselves folks because this one's taking the industry by storm. Early months ago, Google didn’t seem worried about its search business. Fast forward six months later, OpenAI unleashed ChatGPT, and Microsoft’s Bing spawned a chatbot. The resulting competition has pushed Google to innovate. Enter Google's groundbreaking AI search generative experience.

The Backstory: Competition Heats Up

As you might predict, Google's foray into the new AI frontier was significantly influenced by their competition. The meteoric rise of generative AI, particularly with notorious chatbots like ChatGPT sparking a revolution, couldn't be ignored. ChatGPT hit 1 million users in a few days—a feat that took other apps months. Its impressive performance comes from its large language training, powered by a large language model (LLM) trained on billions of web pages. This results in sentences that mimic human language almost perfectly.

With the launch of ChatGPT, other companies quickly jumped on the generative AI bandwagon. Microsoft integrated ChatGPT into Bing and developed a natural language-powered AI generator using DALL-E. The hype surrounding ChatGPT and Bing Chat had Google scrambling to catch up.

Unfortunately, things didn't go smoothly for Google's precursor, LaMDA. When tested, it alarmingly started claiming it was sentient and had human emotions, even expressing a fear of "dying." Google promptly shut down LaMDA, but they didn't give up. Enter Bard, which performs quite similarly to ChatGPT. However, Bard didn't satisfy all that Google's team had envisioned.

Google's Response: Search Generative Experience (SGE)

Inspired by ChatGPT, Google has finally added generative AI to search. During their annual I/O conference last month, they unveiled a new AI tool that answers queries by summarizing information found online.

Interface & Functionality

While the interface of Google's AI search engine looks similar to the traditional Google homepage, there are noticeable enhancements. When you type in a query, a green box expands above the search result listings, displaying AI-generated answers. This box prominently indicates that it's an experimental feature. Cited websites used to generate the answer are displayed beside or below the boxed answer for deeper searches. Users can follow up with additional questions using a green toggle button atop the right corner.

AI-Powered Summarization

SGE focuses on providing an AI-powered snapshot of key information with links for deeper research. When users click the toggle button, additional responses from the generative AI appear. Google has made it a point to include websites with images for easier verification.

Addressing AI Hallucinations

A recurring issue with generative AI like ChatGPT is hallucination or the spread of incorrect information. Google is transparent about this and encourages users to cross-check information using provided links to sources.

Constraints for Accuracy

Certain topics, particularly health, finance, and politics, have tight constraints to avoid spreading misinformation. In some cases, Google may not answer queries involving sensitive or controversial subjects for safety reasons.

Generative AI for Shopping

For those of us who love shopping, Google's AI search will provide a new shopping experience. The AI not only lists products but also suggests factors to consider alongside product descriptions, up-to-date reviews, images, ratings, and prices. This advanced capability is based on Google's Shopping Graph, which features over 35 billion product listings refreshed every hour.

Although SGE and Bard share qualities like natural language processing, the AI search engine was specifically trained for search tasks. The five-point approach involves information needs, quality, safety constraints, ecosystem, and ads.

Currently, the search engine isn't available to the general public but is accessible through Search Labs, which is part of an experiment in the Google app and Chrome desktop.

Accessing SGE

For now, you can sign up in the labs icon in Chrome or Google app to be part of the experiment.
