How to build a capsule wardrobe | Fashion minimalism | Justine Leconte

Howto & Style

Introduction

Welcome back to my channel! In a previous video, I discussed the fast fashion trap and how to escape it, introducing the concept of a capsule wardrobe. Since then, I've received numerous questions about what a capsule wardrobe is, how it works, and more. This year, I aim to provide a comprehensive guide on the capsule wardrobe principle, its benefits, planning methods, how to assess your existing closet, who to follow for inspiration, and I’ll share my personal insights. I'll also address common questions you might have and end with several resources for further reading.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a method of decluttering your closet. Most of us realize we often wear only a fraction of our clothing collection. The goal is to discover your personal style and create a minimal closet containing only pieces you absolutely love and can wear year-round. Generally, you'll aim to limit your clothing to about 36 items, although some suggest numbers like 33 or 37. The focus is on quality over quantity—this approach stems partly from the past, where women in the 1930s had, on average, 36 pieces in their wardrobes compared to the 120 or more we often accumulate today.

It's worth noting that undergarments do not count toward your capsule, and your wardrobe will be designed specifically for one season—either winter or summer—since your clothing needs will change with the seasons.

How to Build Your Capsule Wardrobe

Step 1: Sort Your Existing Closet

  1. Empty Your Closet: Start by taking everything out of your closet and laying it on your bed.

  2. Create Three Piles: Analyze each item and divide them into three categories:

    • Pile 1: Items you can wear every day and love—your basics or uniform.
    • Pile 2: Clothing you like but are not currently wearing due to seasonal variations.
    • Pile 3: Items you haven't worn in over a year. This is the stuff to let go.
  3. Return Pile 1 to Your Closet: These are the golden items that define your style.

  4. Store Pile 2: Keep these items for future seasons and revisit in six months.

  5. Part with Pile 3: Consider selling, donating, or giving them to friends or family.

Step 2: Analyze Your Style

Look at what's left in your closet and determine your style preferences: Do you tend to wear more casual or formal outfits? What colors, shapes, and fabrics do you prefer? This analysis will help in constructing a cohesive capsule wardrobe.

Step 3: Identify Gaps

Now that you know your style, identify what's missing. For instance, if you have enough tops but not enough suitable bottoms, note those gaps.

Step 4: Plan Your Capsule

Carefully consider the proportions of different types of clothing (tops, bottoms, layers) and how you can mix and match items. Each piece should be versatile enough to pair with others in your closet.

Step 5: Look for Inspiration

Here are three YouTubers to follow for ideas on capsule wardrobes:

  • Audrey Coin: Built a winter capsule of 31 items (shoes excluded).
  • Jen Rogers: Created a winter capsule with 34 items.
  • Coco from Light by Coco: Developed a summer capsule with just 20 items.

All three demonstrate unique styles, proving that you can express personality within a capsule wardrobe framework.

Step 6: Revise Your Shopping Behavior

With your planned capsule in mind, focus on filling in the gaps you've identified. Implement a no-shopping rule for at least one month to see if you can live without any additional items. If you find you truly miss something, consider purchasing it to complete your wardrobe. Remember, building a capsule wardrobe is not a punishment; it’s about discovering and refining your style.

Step 7: Seasonal Transition

When transitioning between seasons, revisit your wardrobe. The proportions may shift, but the methodology remains the same.

Addressing Common Questions

  • What about ceremony clothing? Special occasion attire—like saris for weddings—does not count toward your 36 items.
  • What if I can’t narrow down to 36 items? That’s okay! The exercise is still beneficial if you’re downsizing while ensuring you love the items you keep.
