How to Make Data Maps like These? iipmaps.com
Hi everyone, my name is Ashish and I'm the creator of Indian Pixels. For the last 1.5 years, I've been working on a tool to allow anyone to create maps like those you see on Indian Pixels. This tool can be used for research, visualizing surveys, or company data. Be creative! I want to invite you to explore this tool.
In this article, I'll share a short demo of what you can do with this product. Let's dive in.
Join the Waitlist
Right now, you can join the waitlist via the link provided. Let's continue to the tool's landing page at iipmaps.com - the easiest way to make data maps.
Signing In
To create your map, you'll need to sign in via Google. Once signed in, you'll see the home page. It's fairly basic right now but is a work in progress. Here, you'll find various templates for different regions of India and their states. Some templates will have regional boundaries marked with a box.
Access and Templates
If you're on the waitlist, you'll see a waitlist notice. However, let me show you what to expect once you gain access. I'll log in with an account that has full access.
Main Interface
Once logged in, the main interface is divided into two sections:
- Map View (Left Side): This shows the graphical representation of your data.
- Editor View (Right Side): This contains four tabs - Data, Styling, Export, and Library. The Library tab is in beta.
In the Data tab, you can manually input data. For instance, setting Bihar to 45 changes the color for Bihar on the map. You can switch between different color palettes and randomize data entries.
Let's hypothetically say we're mapping the number of chickens per 100 people in each state. Entering such data updates the map accordingly. Customizing elements like titles and legends is also possible by double-clicking on them and setting preferred properties.
Styling Your Map
In the Styling tab, you can change the color gradient. For example, the ‘Bangalore’ palette transitions from red to green. You can adjust contrast by configuring the legend for specific values, making your distinctions clearer. Double-clicking elements allows for further customization, such as setting the source of your data.
Exporting Your Map
In the Export tab, you can download your map as a PNG or SVG file. Auto-saving ensures you won't lose your work. You'll find your projects listed below in the interface.
Library Features
The Library tab offers features to beautify your maps, including adding images. Once your map is ready, you can export it and share it anywhere you'd like.
Smart Features
There are numerous smart features built into the tool. For instance, text gets auto-colored for better readability.
I can't wait for you to try it and provide feedback. My goal is for this tool to be useful for everyone from primary school students to PhD researchers. Let's create something amazing for India.
