How to Really Use Grammarly, Part 1 - Getting Started

Alright everybody, this is Zan from Really Easy AI and it is time for another new series! I don't know if it will be a series, but I'm sure it will be at least two episodes, if not more. The topic? How to really use Grammarly.

I will say from the outset, this is probably the first product that I've reviewed that I didn't automatically set up to cancel. I'm going to be keeping this one for a while; I think the product is that good. So, I'm anxious to show it to you. Alright, let's jump into it.

What is Grammarly?

Let's start with what the heck Grammarly is. Many of you may have heard about it but may not have absolute clarity on what it is. From their website, Grammarly is responsible AI that ensures your writing and reputation shine. Work with an AI writing partner that helps you find the words you need to write that tricky email, get your point across, and keep your work moving. Basically, it’s like having a super awesome spelling and grammar check, plus additional elements constantly checking your work as you go along. Imagine Word's spelling and grammar check on steroids—it's pretty cool.

ROI on Better Writing

What's the return on investment (ROI) for better writing? For organizations, Grammarly's studies show a 17x boost in productivity. Organizations that employ Grammarly save an average of $ 5,000 per employee per year. Data stays private, productivity rises, inbox numbers drop, and teams can focus on what they should do—not on how they should say it. Essentially, it writes for you in many respects or at least makes damn sure your writing is good.

Grammarly's Staying Power

An interesting development: The CEO of Grammarly recently wrote an article about the future of communication in the era of AI. Despite some perceived threats from companies like Apple, Microsoft, and OpenAI, the CEO made it clear that Grammarly is thriving and growing stronger. As of July 26, 2024, Grammarly remains a very specific, very niche product that is exceedingly good at what it does.

Features and Capabilities

Years ago, they wouldn’t have had this comparison, but it's interesting to see Grammarly pitted against ChatGPT. Here's a brief overview:

  • Real-time writing support: Grammarly excels here, while ChatGPT doesn’t provide real-time checks.
  • Generative AI: Available in both, but Grammarly has it in real time.
  • Sentence and paragraph rewrites: You can get it with ChatGPT, but not in real-time.
  • Proactive suggestions: Grammarly offers this, whereas ChatGPT is more reactive.
  • Tone detection and adjustments: Available in Grammarly.
  • Strategic suggestions: Again, Grammarly has the edge.
  • Integrations: Grammarly offers a plethora of integrations.
  • Plagiarism detection: Available in Grammarly, particularly useful for academic settings.

Pricing

Grammarly comes in several pricing tiers, from Free to Enterprise. I’m currently using the free tier, which offers basic functionality but is quite limited. For a fuller experience, the Premium level is advisable, costing $ 12 a month billed annually, or more if billed monthly. Premium gets you a wide array of features like tone adjustment, sentence rewrites, fluency in English, and plagiarism detection.

Installation Options

After signing up, you have multiple install options. It’s critical to install Grammarly for Desktop (Windows or Mac) and for your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari). You can also get Grammarly for mobile (iPhone, iPad, Android). The desktop version is particularly useful as it can show up in a variety of applications and even integrates with Microsoft Office.

Personalizing the Experience

Upon initial login, Grammarly takes you through a wizard to personalize your experience. You specify your writing needs, company size, primary function, and goals. You also indicate your experience with generative AI and the applications you typically use. This helps Grammarly tailor its functionality to suit you best.

Getting Started Checklist

Once signed up and installed, Grammarly provides an onboarding checklist. It teaches you how to use hover functions for suggestions, pin the extension to your browser, and more. Using the editor, you can create and upload documents to be edited with Grammarly's assistance.
