How to Resize Videos for YouTube Shorts and TikTok Using CapCut

Howto & Style

Introduction

Welcome! In today's tutorial, I'm going to guide you through the process of resizing videos for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram, and Facebook View using CapCut. Additionally, I'll share some tricks to make your videos appear visually appealing after resizing.

As you might know, all of these platforms share the same resolution—9x16. This means if your video was shot in landscape mode or it needs to be converted to portrait mode, CapCut can help you make that transformation effortlessly.

Import your Video

First, I have a beautiful parrot video that I want to resize to fit TikTok or YouTube Shorts. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Open CapCut and import your video.
  2. CapCut will automatically pick the resolution of the video for the timeline, but you can change this easily.

Change the Format

  1. Make sure you're not selecting the footage.
  2. Scroll over to the option that says Format.
  3. Here, you'll find different formats such as 9x16, 16x9, 1x1, etc.
  4. Choose the 9x16 format, which is ideal for YouTube Shorts and TikTok.

Resize the Video

After choosing the 9x16 format:

  1. Resize the video to fit the frame.
  2. Preview and play the video to ensure that the main subjects (in this case, the parrots) fit well within the frame.

Splitting and Adjusting

If at any point the subject is out of the frame:

  1. Scroll to that part, select it, and click on Split.
  2. After splitting, you can easily change the size or position of just that section.

Adjusting Multiple Subjects

If the frame can only fit one subject at a time or has black areas after zooming out:

  1. Make sure you do not select any footage.
  2. Select the option that says Canvas and then click on Color.
  3. Choose a color that you will use consistently for your YouTube or Shorts channel to maintain uniqueness.
  4. For example, I chose a sky blue color, and then clicked on the check mark.

Finally, give your video a final playthrough to ensure that everything looks good.

Of course, there are more advanced ways to achieve this, like using keyframes, but that's for another session.
