How to Upload, Edit & Generate Variations of Images in DALLE 2
Howto & Style
Introduction
If you've been following along with my recent tutorials, you may already know that DALL·E 2 is an incredible AI-powered tool for generating art. In today’s guide, we’ll explore the process of uploading your own images, editing them, and creating different variations—all within DALL·E 2.
Getting Started with DALL·E 2
To begin, you need to log into DALL·E 2. While you normally use the text input box for creating art, today we will focus on image uploads. Click on the upload button, and select your desired file. For this tutorial, I’ve chosen a photo of the Statue of Liberty, which I acquired from Unsplash—ensuring it’s royalty-free for use.
Important Guidelines for Image Uploading
When uploading images, keep the following in mind:
- Respect the rights of others; never upload photos without consent.
- Uploaded images may be reviewed to enforce safety policies and improve models.
- Your data, including uploads, may be utilized to enhance model performance.
Image Formatting Requirements
A limitation of DALL·E 2 is that it only works with square images. Since the uploaded Statue of Liberty photo was landscape-oriented, we need to crop it. Cropping to focus on the Statue itself is a simple solution.
Generating Variations
Once your image is ready, you have options to either edit the image or generate variations. Let’s start with generating variations. After clicking the appropriate button, DALL·E will produce several different styles or interpretations of your original image.
- The first variation usually will appear as more of a digital art rendering.
- Notably, some variations might feature different angles or perspectives—like a flipped viewpoint.
- Ultimately, you might not find all variations to your liking, but they can provide creative and surprising outcomes.
To return to the original image, simply click on it to continue editing.
Editing the Image
Next, let’s delve into the editing features. DALL·E 2 allows you to erase parts of the photo and replace them with something entirely different. For example, let’s erase the Statue of Liberty and see what happens when we replace it with the Eiffel Tower.
Using the erase tool, you can manipulate the image using either a stylus or by clicking with your mouse. Once you’ve erased an area, type your desired replacement (in this case, “Eiffel Tower”) into the text box. DALL·E will produce several new interpretations that incorporate your chosen element into the existing image.
Exploring Further Variations
If the initial replacement doesn’t yield the desired outcome, you can always go back, adjust your erasure, and try again. It’s fascinating how DALL·E 2 can combine various elements while retaining the primary structure of the original image.
Additional Features
In DALL·E 2, you’ll also find an option called ‘Outpaint,’ which allows for even more expansive editing capabilities. However, this feature is less effective on mobile devices, so it’s recommended to use a Mac or PC for optimal results.
Future Content
Next, we’ll be examining an exciting collaboration between DALL·E 2 and Affinity Photo on the iPad. Affinity Photo offers an alternative to Photoshop, and when paired with DALL·E 2, it opens up a world of possibilities for creative projects.
