Hunt Patch 2.0 Review - Big WIN or huge DISAPPOINTMENT? Podcast Hunt / Feedback for Crytek
Gaming
Introduction
Welcome back to the channel, everyone! Today, we're diving into the much-anticipated Patch 2.0 for Hunt: Showdown. I've been wanting to create this review for quite some time; however, preparing my usual detailed slides takes ages. This time around, the update is massive—possibly the biggest one we've ever received—so I’ll be going through the patch notes directly and giving my thoughts on whether these changes are improvements, shortcomings, or catastrophic failures.
My History with Hunt
Before we jump in, I’d like to share my background. With close to 9,000 hours invested in Hunt, I have immense respect for the developers at Crytek. My criticisms and feedback stem from a place of passion for the game. It's not perfect, and there are certainly areas worth discussing today.
New Map: M Sculch
Let’s begin with the new map, M Sculch. It’s the fourth map added to the game, and while many have wondered about the fate of the old maps, they will gradually return as they get reworked. M Sculch features familiar square kilometer size, enhanced details, and includes 16 new and unique locations to explore.
Grizzly Lodge stands out with its amazing attention to detail, complete with Easter eggs. However, there are some concerns regarding certain compounds, particularly Gas Works, which tends to create stale mate scenarios too often.
Players can now get a head start by spawning near the map edges, which gives them a chance to gather clues before others rush to the center. The introduction of mining tunnels for shortcuts is a welcomed change, allowing for more strategic gameplay without excessive camp-fests.
New Wildlife and Equipment
The new animal types, such as bats and cows, have been introduced. Bats add a fun strategic element (especially since they can be avoided), while cows emit a loud sound when killed, which can be awkward.
New equipment comes with the battle pass; notable additions include the 1865 Carbine, a lever-action rifle that, despite having a reasonable damage output, struggles with bullet velocity. The new Infantry 73L is likened to a Windfield, offering a decent performance for players without being overpowered. Additionally, a new crossbow variant and the Rival 78 Trauma shotgun provide unique combat experiences, although balancing remains a concern.
Gunplay Improvements
We’ve also seen improvements in gunplay, such as a centered crosshair option to better align with other shooters. Bullet drop mechanics have been introduced, prompting players to adjust their long-range sniping skills. Shotgun spread has been refined, and adjustments to how headshots and distance work could influence gameplay dynamics significantly.
Balancing Changes and Weapon Modifications
This patch brings various balancing changes: the uppercut’s damage has been reduced, which might impact its usage significantly. In contrast, other weapons, like the officer and the Drilling, have seen modest changes that might increase their viability in combat.
Traps, including the new Black Bad Traps with increased damage, enhance tactical play. However, they've also introduced a bit of unpredictability that could lead to frustration in combat situations.
User Interface and Performance Concerns
Performance on high-end systems has concerns of poor frame rates and unresponsive elements, which might detract from the user experience. There are also interface changes that some players might find confusing.
Conclusion
Overall, this patch includes a mixed bag of improvements and drawbacks. While some changes seem to enhance gameplay, others may create new problems, particularly around healing and burn mechanics. Crytek's intention to improve the experience is clear, but it remains to be seen if these changes will be universally embraced by the player base.
Thank you for reading. Let's keep the discussion going, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
