I Challenged AI in a Design Battle (again).. with Unexpected Results.

Education

Introduction

Today is finally the day—a rematch against AI. The last time we faced it, we were utterly destroyed, but after many hours of training, we believe we have a secret weapon this time. Just as we're gearing up for the challenge, our friend Dami is interrupted by a group of masked individuals looking for him. Amid this unexpected chaos, we prepare for our intense showdown.

The AI has been improving daily, but can we say the same for architects? This competition aims to determine once and for all who reigns supreme: AI or architects? Teams will go head-to-head in a series of challenges designed to evaluate their design, rendering, and presentation skills. The victors will be decided by our Discord community, known as the Arches.

To create a level playing field, Team Architect will utilize the HP Z4 Workstation, a powerful tool provided by HP, which has become essential in many high-stakes design situations.

The competition begins with the Wheel of Architecture, which spins to select our site, program, and design concept. We land on a forested area by Grafton Lake on Bowen Island, tasked to design a retreat that facilitates a focused break, housing four to six sleeping units. The overarching concept is based on the idea of "floating," representing weightlessness and detachment from constraints, and our client? No one other than the fiery Gordon Ramsay.

Challenge One: Floor Plan Design

As we kick off, our strategy is to develop three unique floor plan options before deciding on the best one.

  • Option One: The Overlook: A linear building design featuring private suites at the bottom and a kitchen/dining area that hovers above, offering stunning views of the forest and lake.

  • Option Two: The Loop: A building that wraps around the landscape, presenting distinct dining experiences, one in the forest and another over the lake.

  • Option Three: The Path: Guests approach a body of water with roofs peeking above, providing immersive sound experiences as they explore various distinct interactions with water.

After some deliberation, we choose Option Three, believing its unique procession will allow us to create a compelling experience—an area where AI often falls short.

Challenge Two: Conceptual Visuals

Moving on to the second challenge, we must turn our chosen floor plan into engaging conceptual visuals that effectively communicate our design story. The pressure is on, as this is where we struggled previously. We allocate different sections of the design to each team member to ensure we capture all key moments—entry path, dining experience, and sleeping quarters.

Using D5 Render, we enhance the path leading to our retreat, guiding viewers from a lush forest to a reflective pond surrounded by trees. Our design beckons guests deeper into the experience as they encounter a breathtaking outdoor dining area, culminating in serene sleeping quarters.

Meanwhile, the AI is hard at work analyzing and generating hundreds of images using tools like Midjourney and Runway. The interplay of human oversight and AI assistance enhances the renderings, demonstrating the power of collaboration between the two entities.

With our time running out and our final challenge approaching, it is evident that while AI can rapidly generate beautiful imagery, the emotional connection and design intent still emanate from the human architect.

Our final presentation focuses on the harmonization of architecture and nature, featuring expansive windows, natural materials, and communal dining experiences that dissolve the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The retreat invites relaxation and reconnection with nature, wrapping up the challenge on a high note.

Despite our efforts, we ultimately lose the competition—the AI, with its rapid rendering capabilities, outpaced us in generating visuals. However, the real insights gathered from this challenge reveal the growing importance of collaboration between architects and AI tools.
