Introduction
Hey guys, it's Carl Brain, and welcome back to the channel. Today, we're going to do something a little bit different. I'm going to be getting a real tattoo, but with a twist. Instead of choosing the design myself, I'm going to use a random prompt from an Instagram survey to generate an AI-generated piece of art. That's right, I'm going to get a real tattoo created by artificial intelligence. I'm so nervous. Stay tuned and let's see what kind of tattoo we end up with.
A Brief History of AI and Tattooing
Tattooing has a long and fascinating history, with evidence of the practice dating back thousands of years. In this section, we'll take a journey through time to trace the evolution of tattooing and its cultural significance.
Defining Tattooing
Simply put, tattooing is the practice of inserting ink into the skin to create a permanent design.
Prehistoric Tattooing
Prehistoric tattooing can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. The oldest known tattooed human remains were discovered in 1991 and are believed to be over 5,000 years old. These ancient tattoos were often found on the bodies of high-ranking individuals or those with spiritual standings, leading historians to believe that tattooing may have had a spiritual or cultural significance in these societies.
Ancient Culture
In ancient Egypt, tattooing was often used in religious rituals and as a sign of social status. The Greeks used tattooing for spiritual purposes and to mark slaves and criminals. In Rome, tattooing was used to mark soldiers and as a form of punishment.
Middle Ages and the 18th-19th Century
Tattooing saw a decline in popularity during the Middle Ages. It wasn't until the 18th and 19th centuries that tattooing began to regain popularity, thanks in part to increased travel and exploration of the time.
20th and 21st Century
In the 20th and 21st centuries, tattooing has become mainstream with advances in technology, such as the tattoo gun, helping to popularize the art form. Today, tattooing is a highly diverse art form with a wide range of styles and cultural significance.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence has come a long way in recent years. One significant advancement has been in generating imagery and text.
Early History
The first use of AI for generating imagery dates back to the 1950s when researchers used simple machine learning algorithms to generate black and white images. In the early 2010s, AI-generated imagery started to be used for creating realistic 3D models for video games, generating virtual reality environments, and even creating artwork.
AI and Text Generation
The first use of AI for text generation dates back to the 1960s with rule-based algorithms. It wasn't until the 2010s and the emergence of deep learning algorithms that AI-generated text began to resemble human-written text. Today, AI-generated imagery and text are used in many applications, including content generation for websites, social media, customer service chatbots, and as tools for journalists and writers.
The Experiment: My AI-Generated Tattoo
Last week, I set up a date with my best friend Kelsey for a tattoo. She didn't know what the tattoo was going to be, and she was intrigued. Through the help of the shop, Kelsey, and myself, we got some wild prompts to feed into the AI art generator, DALL-E 2. I've had a blast with this since the Early Access program.
The Big Day
The big day of the tattoo arrived, and I was getting nervous. The winning AI-generated artwork, prompted by Geo, was entitled "Thirst Trap Beetlejuice." Luckily, I love Beetlejuice and a good thirst trap, so the tattoo turned out to be amazing.
Final Thoughts
Would I do this again? Probably not, but it's cool to know that the future is wild and things we can't even conceive of are becoming a reality. Imagine telling someone in the 1950s that you used a computer to generate an image based on text input and then tattooed it on yourself.
A Warning
As with any Carl Brain video, here's a warning: do not get tattoos you'll regret. Tattoo removal businesses are booming, so make sure you're happy with something that's going to be permanently on your body.
Conclusion
I hope you guys enjoyed this video. It was interesting to make, to say the least. Please like this video if you enjoyed it. Until next time, see you guys later.

FAQ
What is an AI-generated tattoo?
An AI-generated tattoo is a tattoo design created by artificial intelligence, based on a random prompt or input.
How has tattooing evolved over time?
Tattooing dates back to ancient civilizations and has evolved significantly through different eras, from a spiritual and social symbol to a mainstream art form.
What advancements have AI made in image and text generation?
AI has made significant advancements in generating realistic 3D models, virtual reality environments, and artwork. For text generation, AI now produces human-like written content using deep learning algorithms.
Would you recommend getting an AI-generated tattoo?
It was an interesting experience, but it's not something I would do again. Always make sure you're happy with a design before getting a permanent tattoo.
What should one consider before getting a tattoo?
It's crucial to ensure that you're happy with the design, as it will be a permanent fixture on your body. Removal procedures are available but can be costly and painful.
