I Tried an AI Music Generator: Any Good? | SoundRaw

Music

Introduction

AI music and AI music generators are here, and it's safe to say they're here to stay. The folks over at SoundRaw reached out to me, offering me the chance to give their tool a whirl. I thought, why not try it together? Here's an honest walkthrough of my first experience using SoundRaw, highlighting its features and capabilities.

The Platform Overview

SoundRaw offers a free trial, which is what I'm using in this demo. So, you can follow along and replicate what I'm doing at home. When you first log in, you're taken to the homepage where you can choose the length of your song (from 10 seconds to 5 minutes). The platform also lets you set the tempo (slow, normal, fast, or all) and pick from various genres including Hip-Hop, Trap, Drill, R&B, Latin, Rock, Ambient, Beats, Drum and Bass, Electro Dance, Pop, Orchestra, Electronica, and many more.

Mood and Theme Options

If you prefer to select music by mood, you've got options like epic, happy, hopeful, laidback, angry, glamorous, mysterious, heavy, and ponderous. There's also a "theme" section that can help you narrow down your selection to fit specific contexts like corporate, photography, cinematic, comedy, cooking, sport, and action. This makes SoundRaw versatile for everything from entertainment to advertisements or even YouTube intros.

Trying Different Genres

To be fair to the AI, I decided to test it with both easier and more challenging genres. I started with Electro Dance, figuring it would be easier for AI to handle compared to something like rock or funk, which require more real instruments.

Electro Dance Genre

After setting the genre to Electro Dance and playing around with different instruments and moods, I got several results. I could tweak each result further, adjusting the BPM, swapping instruments, and changing the intensity of different parts.

Customization Options

You can customize the song significantly: change the key, add or remove instruments, and modify the intensity for each section of the song. It even shows a graphic that illustrates the intensity for each part, allowing even more granular control.

Testing Harder Styles: Rock and Trap

Next, I pushed the AI with something harder: rock combined with heavy and angry moods. It fell a bit short on this one, as expected. However, I found it interesting that tweaking and switching things up even here could produce some usable ideas.

I also tried Trap with dark and angry moods and found that it gave me some pretty cool ideas, although not perfect.

Practical Applications

SoundRaw can definitely be a useful tool for generating quick ideas or foundations that one could build upon. It also offers licenses (starting at $ 16.99 for content creators) that allow you to use the generated music royalty-free, making it a viable source for YouTube content or even for artists looking to add vocals and instruments.

Summary

In conclusion, SoundRaw is a promising AI music generator with a range of genres and customization options. While it excels in electronic genres, it struggles a bit with more complex, instrument-heavy music. Still, it can be a handy tool for quick inspiration or as a starting point for more developed projects.
