Science & Technology
Introduction
This article is brought to you by Motion Array, a platform with millions of creative assets. Throughout this review, you'll hear their music and sound effects, and we'll later introduce their new AI voiceover generator.
Exploring Peru With the iPhone 16 Pro
From the vibrant streets of Lima to the breathtaking hillsides of Cusco and the ancient walls atop Machu Picchu, this is Peru, captured exclusively on the iPhone 16 Pro. In this review, we will focus on the camera performance by presenting a wealth of sample photos and footage, allowing you to assess the iPhone’s image quality while I narrate—similar to a DVD commentary track.
A heartfelt thanks to Intrepid Travel for providing exceptional guides that kept our trip organized. Typically, I travel with multiple large cameras and lenses; however, this time, I relied solely on the iPhone. The results demonstrated that using an iPhone doesn’t compromise image quality.
Technical Details of the Shoot
Everything showcased in this article was shot on the iPhone 16 Pro. The video was captured in Apple Log using ProRes LT via the Blackmagic Camera app, while most photos were taken in ProRaw DNG format with the native camera app, applying new JPEG XL lossy compression. The footage underwent color grading with my Stallman Let Film Pack (primarily Film 03 and Film 04), and Lightroom was used for photo edits.
To maintain transparency, some images were enhanced using Lightroom's object removal feature to clean background clutter. While this review does involve post-processing, the majority of the footage was shot on the main 1X camera, which is the star of this review, delivering stunning 4K images well-suited for large displays.
It's noteworthy that the iPhone 16 Pro stands out in travel documentary filmmaking. While I've utilized various cameras globally, nothing has compared to the iPhone’s ability to simplify the shooting process without sacrificing quality.
The Benefits of Shooting with iPhone
One of the standout advantages of using an iPhone is its portability and lightweight nature. It easily fits in your pocket, but the display is larger than many traditional cameras. The production quality is impressive, featuring great microphones, excellent battery life, and internet access, which further boosts its functionality.
However, average users may feel a disconnect when comparing their iPhone photos to this review's output. Many iPhone users claim their images appear over-processed or artificial. These concerns stem from the default settings, which tend to soften the image. Adjusting settings in the Apple Photo styles can yield a more natural appearance, but many users may not engage in these edits.
Camera quality is vital, and while the iPhone's Photographic Styles have improved, tweaking the tone and color settings significantly enhances the results, making them look less processed.
Video Quality and Features
In terms of video, the addition of Apple Log to the iPhone 15 Pro marked a huge leap in quality, offering flexibility for serious videographers. Apple Log strips away extensive tone mapping and provides professional-grade color grading capabilities, resulting in footage that can seamlessly fit into higher-end productions.
While the iPhone camera app still lacks certain professional video features, there are excellent third-party apps available, such as Blackmagic Camera, that offer advanced functionalities.
The introduction of faster transfer speeds with USB 3 on the iPhone 16 is a welcome feature, improving workflows for professionals transferring large amounts of data. However, overheating issues persist, reminding users that in demanding shooting conditions, having backup phones can be crucial.
Editing Process Using Lightroom
When editing ProRaw files from the iPhone, the initial step involves switching off Apple’s default ProRaw profile to flaunt more natural colors. Adjustments to exposure levels and applying specific presets can transform the photos dramatically, yielding professional-grade results.
The editing itself is quick and can transform an image from good to exceptional.
