Non-original iPhone batteries are sometimes sold in kits, like this one, which includes tools to undo the cover and other screws in the iPhone. The barcode on this kit had no significance as it was an internal stock number, so it's been obscured for this video.
Here, side by side, are two iPhone 4s batteries. The fitted battery in the iPhone is very likely Apple's original from their factory in China. The one on the right is a random replacement bought via an online auction website. Let's look at the visible differences.
The brand logo seems similar, but for some reason, it's reversed. The circled PSE underneath could indicate Japanese safety testing, but how can the average consumer check the brand in the PSE database?
Turning attention to the connecting terminal: one side should have a frosted bright metal finish on the surface. The replacement doesn't and has a different surface, perhaps more like brushed metal. Easier to spot are the two metal contacts: bright and shiny on the original, dull on the replacement. The adhesive casing tape sealing the connector cable to the battery looks carelessly applied. Note that the original has rounded inner corners where the tape covers the battery or label. The replacement looks more homemade and doesn't have this detail.

In this video clip and in many photos online, the connecting terminal metal and metal contacts can look identical, making it hard to be sure unless buying a battery over-the-counter and in person. The underside of the connecting terminal, shown here, seems to have no difference from the original, while the reverse side does.

FAQ
Q1: How can I identify a genuine iPhone battery?
A1: Look for differences in the brand logo, metal contacts' brightness, adhesive tape application, and the finish on the connecting terminal.
Q2: Are there any certification marks to look for?
A2: Some replacement batteries may have the PSE mark indicating Japanese safety testing, but verifying this against a database can be difficult for the average consumer.
Q3: Is it reliable to buy iPhone batteries online?
A3: Buying batteries online can be risky due to difficulties in verifying their authenticity. It's preferable to purchase them over-the-counter and in person.
Q4: What do the adhesive tape and metal finish indicate?
A4: Original batteries have adhesive tape carefully applied with rounded inner corners and a frosted bright metal finish on the connecting terminal. Replacements often lack these features.
Q5: How can metal contacts help in identifying an original battery?
A5: Genuine iPhone batteries typically have bright and shiny metal contacts, whereas replacements have dull metal contacts.
