In a recent discussion, the ever-iconic Ozzy Osbourne touched upon a fascinating topic that bridges the gap between tradition and modernity: artificial intelligence in music composition. The question posed was whether Ozzy would ever perform a song written by AI.
"No, no," Ozzy responded. "This is the first thing I'd say, as long as you ain't got to pay you any royalties 'cause you're a machine, we're on it. But it's like an instrument, isn't it? It's a fine line because if it's done by a robot, it's like a cheat."
Ozzy comes from an era where songwriting had a certain raw authenticity. "I come from an era when we used to sit in a room and write songs," he explained. The process was deeply involved, and often inspired by the masters like Bob Dylan. Ozzy mused, "We used to look at the old way, go Bordille, you know, you know that's [expletive] old thing."
The generational gap is apparent, and while some of the newer generation might appreciate AI-generated music, it doesn’t hold the same weight for Ozzy and his peers. "The Next Generation, when we all die up, some of them might like it, but not as much as they did when we were doing it," he said, reflecting on the stark difference between technology-driven progress and the tradition-bound era he cherishes.
Ozzy concludes by acknowledging progress but remains skeptical: "Progress is what's the next thing, you know?"
