Make This: Make a Custom 3D Avatar

Hi everyone! My name is Brent Cook, host of the tutorial series on YouTube called "Got Filmin." This month, I'm collaborating with Adobe to celebrate gaming, gamers, and the significant impact video games have had on our pop culture.

Today, I'm going to show you how to create a custom 3D avatar using Adobe Fuse. Once you've crafted your avatar, you can use it for your Facebook profile, YouTube channel, or gamer profile. If you'd like to explore everything you can do in Creative Cloud, click the annotation on the screen.

You might be thinking, "Brent, I don't know how to use a 3D program." Trust me, it's much easier than you think! Let's dive in, shall we?

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a 3D Avatar in Adobe Fuse

Getting Started with Adobe Fuse

When you open Adobe Fuse, you'll see four main text elements at the top: Assemble, Customize, Clothing, and Texture. These are the four steps of modeling within Adobe Fuse.

On the left, we have our controls:

  1. Pan and Zoom Tool: Move around the model in a 2D perspective.
  2. Rotate and Zoom Tool: Rotate the character to view different perspectives.
  3. Center Camera Control: Centers the camera around your model.
  4. Arrow Tool: Select individual parts of your model.
  5. Edit Geometry Tool: Directly edit the model's geometry.

Step 1: Assemble Your Character

Let's start by assembling our character, beginning with the head. Adobe Fuse offers various head options. Pick one that resembles your face. Don't worry if it's not a perfect match—you can fine-tune it in the next stage.

Next, choose a torso that mirrors your physique. Once you have the head and torso, you can right-click on one of the legs and select "Add Matching Parts." This action completes the body model.

Step 2: Customize Your Character

Click on the Customize menu to adjust various aspects of your character. You can tweak the muscles, facial features, and more. You can skip this step if you're already satisfied with your model, but let's explore the options:

  1. Body Parts: Adjust the arms, hands, and fingers using sliders.
  2. Face: Add personality to your character by altering facial expressions.
  3. Head Features: Fine-tune facial features like eye shape, nose, and mouth.

At the end of each menu, there’s a "Randomize" button. Click it to apply random attributes if you're short on time.

Step 3: Add Clothing

Navigate to the Clothing menu. Choose shirts, pants, and accessories to dress your character. You can also select hairstyles, glasses, and even facial hair.

Step 4: Apply Textures

The Texture menu allows for final touches, such as skin color, eye color, and clothing variations. To change a piece of clothing, simply click on it and use the available options on the right-hand side. Use the color wheel to alter the item’s color.

Save and Export

Once you're happy with your model, click on "Save to CC Libraries" in the top-right corner. This saves your model for use in programs like Photoshop and Cinema 4D for further animation.

Importing into Photoshop

Open Photoshop, click on Libraries, find your saved model, and double-click to load it. Now you can start animating your custom 3D model.

Creating a 3D avatar in Adobe Fuse is straightforward, thanks to its extensive customization options. Once you’ve exported your model to Creative Cloud, you can animate it in Photoshop or Cinema 4D.

As always, thank you for watching! For more information on Adobe Fuse and the entire Creative Cloud suite, click the links in the description or visit Adobe.com. I'm Brent Cook—stay tuned for more tutorials!
