In this article, we will guide you through the accessible way to create scores in MuseScore Studio, a popular music notation software. We provide detailed instructions and also address common questions to make the process smoother for all users, including those relying on screen readers.

Step 1: Detailed Instructions

To create a score in MuseScore Studio, follow these steps:

  1. Open a New Score:

    • Navigate to the File menu and select New.
    • Alternatively, use the shortcut Ctrl + N on Windows and Linux or Command + N on Mac OS. This action opens the 'New Score' dialog.
  2. Navigating the New Score Dialog:

    • You will land on a dialog with tabs at the top labeled Choose instruments and Create from template.
    • To select a template, press Shift + Tab a few times until you hear Choose instruments radio button checked.
  3. Switch to Template Selection:

    • If the screen reader says "Choose instruments", press Right to switch to Create from template.
    • Select this option by pressing Space.
  4. Searching for a Template:

    • Focus will move to a search box. Here, you can type in the name of an instrument or ensemble, for example, "quartet", and press Down to navigate through the results.
    • Example results include Barber Shop Quartet Men, Barber Shop Quartet Women, String Quartet.
  5. Choosing a Template Category:

    • If unsure what to search for, leave the search box blank and press Shift + Tab to reach the category list.
    • The top category is General. Use the arrow keys to navigate through other categories such as Choral, Chamber Music, Solo, and Jazz.
    • Press Space to select a category once you find the one you're interested in.
  6. Selecting a Template:

    • After selecting a category, press Tab to move to the list of templates in that category.
    • Use the arrow keys to move through the templates available. For example, in the Jazz category, you might see Jazz Lead Sheet, Big Band, and Jazz Combo.
    • Press Space on the template you need.
  7. Finalizing the Selection:

    • Press Tab twice to move past the Zoom in button and land on the Done button. Do not press Done yet.
    • Instead, press Left Arrow to go to the Next button, which will take you to another page of the dialog.
    • Here, you can specify metadata for the score, including the initial key signature, time signature, and tempo.
