New Water Storage Solution on Homestead ~ We Painted

Introduction

Hey everyone, Eric from Nomatic Fanatic here. Exciting news: we're moving closer to being 100% off-grid! Today, we'll be handling a new 330-gallon food-grade water tank that I got for an amazing price of $ 145. Let me put that into perspective—two of these tanks would give us 660 gallons of water for under $ 300, as opposed to the $ 1,300 green 550-gallon tank I bought previously.

The Plan

To ensure we have enough water storage, I did some quick math (forgive any errors) and realized that by adding the new 330-gallon tank to our current setup:

  • 550 gallons from the large green tank
  • 4x 55-gallon tanks giving us 220 gallons

That totals 770 gallons. Adding the new 330-gallon tank bumps our capacity to 1,100 gallons, not 1,000 gallons as I initially thought.

Getting Set Up

We have an adapter that's essential for connecting a standard ¾ inch garden hose to the new tank. This will streamline things significantly compared to our current five-piece setup.

Practical Solution

The reason for painting this new tank is to prevent algae and bacterial growth by blocking sunlight. We started with some paint from Dollar General, but it wasn't very effective. So, we ended up buying Rustoleum 2x blue paint from Home Depot.

Cat Adventures

Opie, our cat, joined us on a trip to get the new tank. We even took him to a farmer's market and let him pick out his own fish. Opie also tried a new chest harness that allowed me to carry him around, which he seemed to enjoy.

Water Management

Clear Choice Water still charges only $ 65 for 1,000 gallons delivered, which is more efficient and cost-effective than us making multiple trips to fetch water. We have set up fly traps to handle the fly infestation, and they seem to be working well.

Painting and Preparation

After painting, our newly painted blue tank looks great and matches our other blue barrels. The Clear Choice adapter makes our water management easier. Danny also got his new solar panels installed, providing 2,000 watts of power.

The Final Stretch

After some delays due to no-shows, Clear Choice confirmed our water delivery for today. We decided to distribute the water among different tanks, including Danny's 275-gallon tank, to ensure we have ample storage.

Conclusion

With the water tanks filled and everything set up, we're now prepared for any water needs we might encounter while living off-grid. Expect more exciting updates as we continue improving our homestead.
