Ninja Slushi Review: Does This Slushie Maker Work?

Howto & Style

Introduction

Welcome back, everybody! Today, I’ll be reviewing the much-anticipated Ninja Slushie, one of the most requested items of the year. In previous reviews, I covered the Ninja Thirsty Drink System and the Ninja Creamy Ice Cream Maker. The Ninja Slushie seems to fit perfectly between those two in terms of texture, though not in price. Costing around $ 300 when purchased directly from the Ninja website, it features five presets.

Let’s jump right into the unboxing! Upon opening the box, I was shocked by its size—it's much larger than I expected. Inside, I found various components including the owner’s guide, instructions, and the slushie maker itself. This appliance is significantly bigger than both the Ninja Creamy and Ninja Thirsty Drink System.

Features and Operation

The Ninja Slushie boasts several impressive claims, including the ability to create frozen drinks without the need for ice. Thanks to its rapid chill technology, it aims to deliver perfect, frozen drinks every time. It reportedly accomplishes this by circulating the liquid around a chilling cylinder, maintaining the ideal temperature and texture.

The slushie maker includes five settings—Slush, Spiked Slush, Frappe, Milkshake, and Frozen Juice—as well as a customizable temperature control for texture adjustments. With a self-serve handle for easy pouring and a whisper-quiet compressor that keeps drinks cold for up to 12 hours, it's an intriguing addition to any kitchen.

After thoroughly reviewing the owner's guide and instructions, I disassembled and cleaned the parts. The vessel features a pore spout, a condensation catch that needs cleaning after each use, and an augur. The front panel consists of various presets and a rinse cycle option. With all components prepared, it was time for my first batch—a soda slushie.

The First Test: Soda Slushie

Using the quick start guide, I poured 24 oz of soda (a 2 L bottle) into the vessel and selected the Slush setting, which should take about 15 minutes to complete. As the machine worked, I monitored it closely. At around the 13-minute mark, most of the soda had thickened nicely. Although I never heard the expected beep indicating optimal temperature, the end product was a perfect slushie, reminiscent of those you would find at a local convenience store.

Despite this being an easy success, I wanted to try more complex beverages. After dispensing the soda slushie and running a rinse cycle, I moved on to create a frozen mango margarita using the Spiked Slush preset. The process was almost the same. After pouring in all necessary ingredients, including margarita mix and tequila, it took around 30 minutes to perfect the drink, which turned out to be just as delicious as I hoped.

Further Experiments with Frappe and Milkshake

The subsequent trials included a coffee frappe and a chocolate milkshake. For the frappe, I combined chilled coffee, half and half, sugar, and vanilla. Although it took longer than expected, the flavor and thickness turned out to be just right for my taste. The same can be said for the milkshake, which came out perfectly creamy.

The final experiment was the frozen juice feature. Testing at both the lowest and highest temperature settings offered an interesting contrast. The lowest yielded a delicious juice slushy in just 12 and a half minutes, while the highest resulted in an almost solid consistency that challenged the notion of what a juice drink could be.

Conclusion

In terms of pros, the Ninja Slushie is easy to use, relatively quiet compared to standard blenders, and offers a variety of recipes that yield delightful results. The downside, however, is its steep price tag at $ 300, making it one of the more expensive options on the market.

Overall, if you're willing to invest in a versatile and effective slushie maker, the Ninja Slushie is well worth considering.
