Runway Gen-3 AI Video Generator Released! Prompts & Tutorial

The Runway Gen-3 AI video generator has finally been released to the public, and there's been a ton of hype about how this AI video generator is the best that's out there, so I had to try it out for myself. I did a lot of testing and in this article, I'll give you my honest impressions about the pros and cons of Runway Gen-3. I'll show you several different examples of videos I created so you can decide for yourself.

    Getting Started

I logged into the homepage, and the "Get Started" button took me to the AI video interface. Right now, only text-to-video is available, so you'll enter your prompts into the prompt box to generate videos.

    Prompts and Testing

For prompting, I wanted to test out a few main things: the camera motion and shot type, some different subjects and lighting conditions, and video styles.

Example 1: Camera Motion and Shot Types

    • Prompt: Follow a female detective walking down a dark alley in Istanbul. The alley is dimly lit with broken street lights.

    • Result: The videos are created pretty fast, usually in 1-2 minutes, and the result seems pretty good. The detective walks down a dark alley. There is some lighting from the lamps, and the scene and motion stay consistent for the entire duration of the video without any warping. The environment also looks pretty realistic.

    • Prompt: Long shot of a man walking through a desert.

    • Result: The walking motion is fluid, although if you look closely at the face and body of the man, it is very obvious that it's AI-generated. It kind of looks like a character from a video game like GTA.

    • Prompt: Close-up shot on a female astronaut's eyes. The camera zooms out and reveals the astronaut on the moon.

    • Result: The AI follows the camera motion pretty well, starting close-up on the eyes and pulling back to show the environment on the moon, but the lower body of the astronaut is wearing shorts, which isn’t realistic.

Example 2: Subjects and Lighting Conditions

    • Prompt: Close-up shot of a woman wearing a futuristic neon necklace and earrings in a dystopian sci-fi film.

    • Result: This video was probably the best out of all my results. The consistency and the identity of the character and the motion are all really good. The background is coherent, and it follows my prompt closely.

    • Prompt: A woman wading through a swamp holding a torch.

    • Result: It does look cinematic, but unfortunately, you'll see some warping with the arms and the torch. She starts out facing away from us, but then suddenly the face and torso warp to face us.

    • Prompt: A hunter in a forest with lighting from a fire.

    • Result: Overall, a pretty solid sample with nothing to complain about.

Example 3: Different Animation and Film Styles

    • Prompt: A retro sci-fi film with pastel colors.

    • Result: The motion and details are really good, but it doesn't really follow the prompt for a retro film style.

    • Prompt: Mermaid shot with Sing Still film.

    • Result: This turned out really well; the water effects look amazing. Environment and landscape videos will probably be Gen-3’s strong suit.

    • Prompt: Pixel animation.

    • Result: It looks like some sort of suburban neighborhood, but the smaller faces on the children look a bit distorted.

    Limitations and Pricing

Although Runway Gen-3 can generate impressive 10-second videos, they are quite pricey. The standard plan starts at $ 15 per month, giving you 625 credits, which amounts to only 6 ten-second videos. Additional credits can be purchased, but it still amounts to around $ 1 for a 10-second video, which is expensive. Moreover, while it excels in text-to-video generation, adding image-to-video functionality is crucial to staying competitive.
