Session #195 - It's been an AI Summer (and Season 8 Kickoff)

    blog thumbnail

    Introduction

Hello and welcome to Writers Group Therapy! I'm Tom, and this is Rashne. We're both writers dedicated to helping fellow writers with their craft and career hurdles. Today marks the kickoff of our eighth season, and we can't believe how far we've come. However, as we dive back into our discussions, we realize that the landscape of the industry we cherish isn't quite as welcoming as it could be.

Instead of a “hot girl summer,” we’re experiencing a “hot AI summer.” The characters on our creative beaches are more like AI robots than the vibrant personalities we love. The big conversation happening in Hollywood revolves around how different factions are responding to the rise of AI—while writers, actors, voiceover artists, and more unite to protect their rights, producers and technical experts marvel at how these tools can streamline their work.

An interesting point to consider: during the recent upheaval, we stumbled upon a rather amusing realization while watching “Terminator 2.” The film is set in the year 2029, where AI has taken over, and the vibe is eerily similar to today. Back in the '90s, people were captivated by the concept of AI, maybe thinking it was a thing of the distant future—yet here we are, just a few years away from the date the film predicted!

As we reminisce about last summer's writers’ strike— which began in May and saw actors joining the push by July—we note that the industry still hasn't fully recovered. The voiceover aspect of SAG-AFTRA has begun its own strike around the same time this year, primarily addressing concerns over AI usage without adequate protections in place.

What’s surprising is that this current strike hasn’t garnered the same level of media attention as last year's events—and perhaps that's a reflection of how fatigued the industry is from so much upheaval. The Animation Guild is also struggling with negotiations—it's a rough time for the entire creative industry.

While some writers may not have attended the picket lines due to personal circumstances, we recognize that a lack of unity during these strikes could be detrimental. The failure of contracts to expire simultaneously means disjointed negotiations and watered-down resolutions. The industry is witnessing lean times as fewer projects materialize following last year’s strike, leaving many professionals grappling for opportunities.

Voiceover work has grown exponentially in recent years. We’re inundated with animated content and video games that rely heavily on voice talent. However, the challenges of AI looms large. The recent rise of AI in content creation brings up concerns about originality, ethics, and potential job losses.

While some have found ways to adapt—like using AI for casting suggestions, drafting marketing materials, or creating imagery for pitch decks—there’s a collective anxiety about the long-term effects. A fascinating aspect lies in the generative AI capabilities, spurring discussions about how writers can leverage these tools responsibly rather than replacing the creative process.

We also highlight the growing interest in developing guidelines around using AI-generated content, especially concerning copyright issues and how it might affect submissions or competitions in the best possible light.

Much like the chaotic environment within Hollywood right now, the future feels uncertain. As we transition through the changing seasons, we're left with questions about where the industry will end up. It’s easy to mirror the past aspirations with today's emerging technologies. Perhaps we need to return our focus to quality over quantity and remember the value of anticipation.

As we wrap up this session, we remind you that it’s an evolving landscape, one that we are all a part of. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences regarding AI and its role in your writing journey.
